ISAF Training Scholarship

The ISAF Training and Development Department is pleased to announce that the IOC Olympic Solidarity department has agreed to fund a Training Scholarship candidate from Mozambique on the 8 week courses at the Rockley Academy venue in Poole, UK from 3 September - 26 October 2012.
Mr. Hélio da Rosa Alberto, also the Secretary General of the National Federation will become the fourth candidate for the 2012 Course. He was identified by South African Sailings National Training Manager Rob Holden during a Level 3 Technical Course for Coaches in Maputo ahead of the All African Games in 2011. After discussions between ISAF, the Federaçâo Moçambicana de la Vela e Canoagem, IOC Olympic Solidarity and the National Olympic Committee of Mozaqmbique the official approval for the application was given.

Mr Hélio da Rosa said of the decision, "I feel very happy for the Course that I'm going to attend because it will not only benefit myself but also the structure of training of the federation that is trying to establish a long term program to develop sailing. Sailing in Mozambique is at the moment practiced in south and central parts of the country and we are working to change that figure and increase the number of sailors and schools for them and also in medium and long term achieve an Olympic qualification.

"Our federation started in 2009 and we have organized sailing event of the All African Games Maputo successfully and we are going to organize the African Championship of Optimist in 2014. We are increasing the number of sailors every year since 2000 but now we need a better structure to face all the challenges we have and succeed with the plans proposed. These are the motivations that are driving me to achieve such aims and the course will be a starting point to materialize our plans. I'm looking forward to help to train more coaches that are going to develop the skills in their clubs and make training and also planning the sailing national team activities for the future competitions. I would like to acknowledge the efforts made by Rob Holden (SouthAfrican Sailing), Dan Jaspers (ISAF), and from Mozambique - Carlos Prista, Décio Muianga, José Luis Alcantâra Santos, Dalva Brito and Sulemane Cassamo. The IOC and the National Olympic Committee also had an important role in the process to guarantee my participation in the course."

Dan Jaspers, ISAF Training and Development Manager said, "The successful placement of a Scholarship candidate from Mozambique goes to show that the Development programmes within ISAF are working to benefit all our members. Mozambique has shown that they are keen to develop and are ready to work at creating and cohesive National Training Programme that over the coming years will see them go from strength to strength. Having formed a close relationship with the South African National Federation has also helped them to gain access to ideas and resources for use in their own schemes. Africa is one of our greatest areas of growth potential and it makes me very happy to see that those leaders of the Mozambique Federation have embraced the programmes on offer by ISAF and are using them to drive their development forward."
