Further north at Melbourne Airport, the breeze is predicted to be even stronger averaging 22-23kts and temperatures, which drive the wind strength, are creeping into the low 30s later in the day.
During the day the breeze is expected to swing through the west and be in a southerly direction this evening. If this happens as forecast, organisers are hoping for a weather window of 13-15kt average breezes, from a westerly direction, which will allow the Medal Races to take place.
Principal Race Officer Ross Wilson reported at 09.00 there was, "25-30kts plus from the north and signals have been flown to keep all boats on shore. We believe we may have a window of opportunity around 13.00 to get racing underway. Which may well be for the Medal Races only."
Wilson only rated the chances of the wind moderating to the point where racing would be possible at 25%. "We are looking for an opportunity when the northerly and southerly breeze start to fight each other, which will be our opportunity to begin racing."
"If we don't get that weather window, then it is "sayonara" to the day, and the results stand as they are," Wilson explained.
The expected weather window opens an hour after the first scheduled race.
Medal Races will be held to the following schedule:
12:00 - Mixed Mutlihull, Nacra 17
12:35 - Women's Windsurfer, RS:X
13:10 - Men's Windsurfer, RS:X
13.45 - Women's Skiff, 49erFX
14:20 - Men's Skiff, 49er
15:00 - Men's and Women's Kiteboarding
All Medal Races will be sailed on the Stadium Course in front of the Sandringham Yacht Club, providing an excellent vantage point for spectators.
