The Laser Fleet

Steve King The laser is currently the biggest fleet at Ullswater Yacht Club with 10+ lasers attending on a regular basis. The fleet is built up of laser One's, Laser Radial and Laser 4.7, so no matter which version you will find excelant class competition.

The International Laser Class sailboat, also called Laser Standard and the Laser One is a popular one design class of small sailing dinghy. It is a singlehanded boat, meaning that it is sailed by one person. The design, by Bruce Kirby, emphasizes simplicity and performance. The dinghy is now manufactured by several boat manufacturers worldwide (see External Links).

The Laser is one of the most popular single-handed dinghies in the world. By 2007, the number of boats produced exceeded 190,000. A commonly cited reason for its popularity is that it is robust and simple to rig and sail.

"Laser" is mainly used to refer to the Laser Standard (the largest of the sail plan rigs available for the Laser hull), but this can be very confusing as there are a series of other "Laser"-branded boats using different hulls. Examples include the Laser 2 and Laser Pico, but these may be called Laser 2, and a Pico.

Laser Announcements

Happy New Year to all Laser sailors everywhere.

In the absence of willing volunteers I am grateful to Mark Simpson for agreeing to take over from me as Class Captain.

The Sailing Committee has agreed to put dates in the sailing calendar for a Laser series. As far as I remember they are 24/4, 15/5, 5/6, 26/6, 14/8, 4/9, 25/9. We could include the Open Meeting on July 16th if we wanted. We will run it as part of the normal Sunday racing and just pick out the results ourselves. I think it will be up to us to decide if we want handicaps or seperate results for full and radial rigs and anyone with ideas about it should contact Mark. (marksimpson@talktalk.net). Please put these dates in your diary and try to target them as days you must sail so that we can get really good fleets on the water. If anyone can find a prize sponsor that would be good, saves us being a burden on the club.

For 2011 the Sailing Committee has also decided that instead of asymmetric and symmetric starts there will be fast and slow handicaps with a cut-off at 1000. The fleets should be similar to before but I think it means RS 200s racing with us. Laser 3000 will be in the fast fleet.

Tim Hulse Laser clinic has been agreed for May 7th. I don't know how many he can take , further details nearer the time.

You may have seen UKLA have published their training programme which for possibly the first time includes events in the North, all at Sunderland and I think starting at the end of this month. It is for UKLA members only and details should be on the UKLA web site.

Final thing is that the dinghy park layout is being redesigned and I think the plan is all Lasers will be together in the section beside the car park. The RYA seems to think that having us all together will encourage us to go sailing.

Club re-opens on March 26th, rain or shine (or, more likely, snow and ice).
