After the wind deserted Kiel on Monday, the thermal breeze brought with it a busy schedule on Tuesday as most competitors sailed three races, except the Star and Finn fleets which only finished two.

Olympic Visit

Mark STUBBINGS, Chief Executive of the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, the host venue for the 2012 Olympic Sailing Competition, observed the racing on the water. He was impressed by the numerous race courses and the race committees of Kiel Week with volunteers from six German sailing clubs effectively involved on each course. He informed the media about the preparations in Weymouth for 2012 including the accommodation of competitors on moored passenger liners, a newly built media centre and the five race courses around Weymouth Bay.

Out on the race courses, the host nation continued to dominate in the Tornado fleet, although now Johannes POLGAR and Florian SPALTEHOLZ (GER) lead from Kiel veteran Roland GAEBLER and crew Gunnar STRUCKMANN (GER). Germany also leads in the Star fleet, with Marc PICKEL and Ingo BORKOWSKI (GER) ahead of Hans SPITZAUER and Christian NEHAMMER (AUT) and Rick MERRIMAN and Rick PETERS (USA). Germany lost the lead though in the Paralympic 2.4mR fleet, with Thierry SCHMITTER (NED) overtaking reigning IFDS World Champion Heiko KRÖGER (GER).

Sylvia VOGL and Carolina FLATSCHER (AUT) maintained their lead in the Women's 470 fleet ahead of Elise RECHICHI and Tessa PARKINSON (AUS), whilst Ai KONDO and Naoko KAMATA (JPN) have moved up into third. In the men's fleet, Mathew BELCHER and Nick BEHRENS (AUS) fell back from first to third. Sime FANTELA and Igor MARENIC (CRO) take over the lead going into the Medal Races followed by the German crew of Lucas ZELLMER and Heiko SEELIG.

Croatian Leaders

Croatia also leads the 49er fleet, with Pavale KOSTOV and Petar CUPAC displacing home favourites Marcus BAUR and Hannes BAUMANN (GER). Emil TOFT NIELSEN and Simon TOFT NIELSON (DEN) follow in third place. In the Finn fleet Gasper VINCEC (SLO) took the overall lead, four points ahead of Anthony NOSSITER (AUS) and 12 in front of Ivan KLJAKOVIC GASPIC (CRO).

Jo ALEH (NZL) continues to lead in the Laser Radial fleet, with Krystal WEIR (AUS) second and Sarah STEYAERT (FRA) third. World Champion Michael BLACKBURN (AUS) is the runaway leader in the Laser fleet after six consecutive bullets. In the two RS:X fleets Poland still leads thanks to Max WOJCIK (POL) and Agata BRYGOLA (POL).

The weather forecast for Wednesday is a light to moderate easterly thermal breeze with the Medal Races on the final day for the Olympic Classes at Kiel Week 2007.
