Tornado Europeans
Lake Silvaplana

Bundock/Forbes (AUS) win the Open Fleet title and the event overall. Second in the European Fleet was Styles/May (GBR) and third Landenberger/Rusterholz (GER).
The final day of the regatta was the best of the whole week. The Sun was shining and the wind finally co-operating ,gusting up to 18 knots. The venue proved to be one of the most tricky and challenging sailing spots in the World. The Silvaplana lake is only 2 km long x 800mts wide with mountains of up to 3000 mts on either side. During the final day the boats reached speeds of 26knts (50kph). The good conditions also brought out an estimated 500 recreational sail boarders and kite surfers with many collisions. The Spainish team hit a kite surfer and became tangled causing the Tornado to capsize .

The Regatta was delayed for the first 2 days because of no wind and even after getting under way it was slow going in the very light winds. Because of the size of the lake the fleet was split into groups so no more than 32 boats were racing at one time. This proved a difficult formula of round robin racing for the class not used to this program.

Sydney Olympic Gold Medalists , Roman Hagara and Hans Peter Stienacher from Austria were declared the 2001 European Champions. They dominated the racing that was so similar to the lake sailing in their home club.
