The International Tornado Association (ITA) has revealed its new-look committee headed by new ITA President and Beijing-bound sailor, Carolijn BROUWER (BEL).
The recently-formed new ITA Committee is comprised of some of the biggest names in world Olympic Class sailing and was elected at the class Annual General Meeting, held in Takapuna, New Zealand in February. The new ITA President is Belgian sailor
Carolijn BROUWER, with the committee predominantly comprised of elite sailors heading to the Beijing Olympic Games.
"We believe this new committee represents the Tornado family," BROUWER said.
"The new committee has a new, modern look and is made up of energized and motivated sailors used to dealing with the media, sponsors and officials."
BROUWER is a four-time World Champion in the Laser and Europe dinghy classes and a silver medallist in the Tornado at the 2007
ISAF Sailing World Championships in Cascais, Portugal. BROUWER, also the 1998
ISAF World Sailor of the Year, brings a wealth of experience to her new role with the Belgian sailor an ITA Committee member between 2005 and 2008 and a member of the ISAF Events Committee since 2004.
The new ITA Vice-Presidents are
Darren BUNDOCK from Australia and
Konstas TRIGONIS from Greece.
BUNDOCK, who holds the record for the most Tornado World crowns in history after winning his sixth in New Zealand in 2008, has been a Tornado Association member for 17 years and acted as Tornado Technical Committee Chairman between 2001 and 2005. A silver medallist in the class at the 2000 Sydney Games, BUNDOCK is heading to his third Olympic Games in China this year.
TRIGONIS is a former two-time world champion in the 470 class (1995 and 2002) and has been a Tornado sailor since 2005 and already claiming one Tornado European Championship. TRIGONIS, a three-time Olympian, also served on the Technical Committee between 2007 and 2008.
The secretary of the association is Patricia KIRSHNER who has served in this role since 2004 with German sailor
Gunnar STRUCKMANN as treasurer.
The ITA Committee also comprises two-time Spanish World Tornado Champion and 2005 ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year
Fernando ECHAVARRI of Spain, two-time Tornado World Championship silver medallist
Leigh MCMILLAN of Great Britain, reigning Tornado World Championship silver medallist and ITA Committee member since 2005,
Oskar JOHANSSON of Canada and former World Youth Champion
Niko MITTELMEIER of Germany.
