Kiel Week 2008
Kiel, Germany

After Wednesday's first race day for the Olympic events at the ISAF Grade 1 Kiel Week, the leading teams in each class donned the yellow jersey at the start of day two.
Northern Germany offered perfect sailing conditions along the Kiel Fjord on Thursday, a westerly breeze 11-16 knots, in gusts up to 20 knots, partly sunny and cloudy.

Following the idea made famous in cycling, the leading crew in each class will wear the "yellow jersey" on a day to day basis, thus defending the overall lead of the preceding race day. Additionally, the teams in second and third overall will wear green (second) and pink jerseys (third), which also change on a daily basis.

The top team of the Star fleet after four races, wearing the yellow jersey on Thursday is Fredrik LOOF and Anders EKSTROM (SWE) who sailed their Star to victory in both races on Thursday and left Robert SCHEIDT and crew Bruno PRADA (BRA) wearing the green jersey on Friday. SCHEIDT commented: "In today's first race Fredrik LOOF was one narrow boatlength ahead of us on the finishing line; for the start of the second race we were 2 minutes late due to a mainsail problem just before the gun!"

The pink jersey (third overall) goes to Alexander HAGEN and Frithjof KLEEN (GER) who have finished each of the four races in third place.

Victory in the fourth race of the Finn fleet helped Ed WRIGHT (GBR) to the overall lead on 11 points, followed closely by Jonas HOEGH-CHRISTENSEN (DEN) and Rafa TRUJILLO (ESP), both on 12 points.

Top scorer of the 2.4mR keelboat fleet isDamien SEGUIN (FRA) with Heiko KRÖGER (GER) close on his heels in second overall and Thierry SCHMITTER (NED) third after five races.

Thursday's two races in the RS:X men's class (two groups) and women's fleet resulted in Przemyslaw MIARCZYNSKI (POL) holding the lead of the men's fleet and wearing the yellow jersey. Second overall after six races is Casper BOUMAN (NED) followed by his countryman Dorian VAN RIJSSELBERGE (NED). Top board sailors in the women's fleet are Romy KINZL (GER) in first, Agata BRYGOLA (POL) in second and Marta HLAVATY (POL) lying third.

The elite of international Laser sailors are present in Kiel. Andrew MURDOCH (NZL) and Tom SLINGSBY (AUS) share the lead on five points overall, and Gustavo LIMA (POR) lies third, tied on nine points with Adonis BOUGIOURIS (GRE).

In the women's Laser Radial fleet Lijia XU (CHN) scored a bullet in Thursday's first race and maintains the overall lead on five points. Sari MULTALA (FIN) is second overall after winning Thursday's second race, with world #1 Anna TUNNICLIFFE (USA) in third.

The 470 men's fleet as the following teams at the top after five races: Tobias ETTER and Felix STEIGER (SUI) in first on nine points, Yuanzhen XU and Terence KOH (SIN) second on 11; and Geoffrey WOOLLEY and Mark OVERINGTON (NZL) third on 14. Ai KONDO and Naoko KAMATA (JPN) won both of the day's races on the 470 women's course and secured their lead on five points overall. Therese TORGERSSON and Vendela SANTEN (SWE) followed in second with 11 points, and will wear the green jersey, while Henriette KOCH and Lene SOMMER (DEN) will show up in pink on Friday.

The 49er teams started in two groups and after seven races the leading Spanish team Iker MARTINEZ and Xabier FERNANDEZ scored 11 points overall, followed by Rodion LUKA and George LEONCHUK (UKR) in second place and Nico DELLE - KARTH and Nikolaus RESCH (AUT) in third.
