Wharington and the Skandia crew, previously untried in trade wind spinnaker sailing contested Queensland's premier race on a course where the exciting Sean LANGMAN skippered AAPT had dominated with three line honours wins including the race record.

The clash between Australia's fastest AAPT and the new and larger challenger Skandia captured the interest of a number of race veterans who were undecided on who would win on a course that held a number of hidden challenges.

Skandia had already claimed line honours in the Rolex Sydney Hobart Race and held an important size and power advantage, which was revealed when skipper Wharington and crew overcame a match racing duel with AAPT to claim an 11 minute 58 second victory in a new race record time of 20-24-50.

However they were forced to overcome a mid race fright when AAPT sailed around them in the dark.

This changed the complexion of the race with Skandia regaining the lead and finally sealing an 11 minute 58 second win during the final 11 n/ml spinnaker run to the finish.

The exceptionally fast course times paved the way for AAPT and Skandia to dominate the major corrected handicap places with AAPT showing her class to turn the tables on her rivals with a resounding 1 hour 6 minute 9 second win over Skandia with Bill Wild's Mumm 36 Corum another 53 minutes 44 seconds away third.
