After a stormy and slightly moody start to the day, which saw showers and heavy cloud cover, the action finally began at 12:15pm, as the synonymous Maui sunshine burned through, however there were still a number of squalls. The variable winds and mast high sets made for tricky conditions, resulting in a few masts and sails being sacrificed to the infamous reef and rocks of Ho'okipa.
Double Elimination
Title Decider
The title decider saw two men - Marcilio Browne and Alex Mussolini - competing in a four-man heat against Josh Angulo (Angulo / Gun Sails) and Robby Swift (JP / NeilPryde / Mystic / Maui Ultra Fins) for the 2013 PWA Wave World Championship. The heat was one of the most eagerly anticipated and high-pressured heats for a number of years, with both Browne and Mussolini looking to claim their maiden PWA Wave World titles. After an intense twenty-two minutes it was soon revealed that Browne had advanced, whilst crucially Mussolini, agonizingly missed out in third place as the two-time PWA Wave World Champion, Angulo, also advanced. Browne produced one terrific wave consisting of a powerful, vertical turn, straight into an incredible air taka and one more gouging hack to write his name in windsurfing history! The tension on the beach, as the result was revealed was palpable, Browne was soon overcome by a sense of disbelief and euphoria at the same time, whilst Mussolini saw his title dreams come to an end. However, Mussolini, can still hold his head high after achieving his best finish to date on the PWA World Tour - second - and he'll be back stronger than ever for 2014.
Marcilio 'Brawzinho' Browne speaks after capturing his maiden PWA Wave World Championship, "It's my childhood dream, it's what I've been working towards for my whole life and it's finally come true, it's unbelievable. It's been a long week and as much as you try to think about it, it's always there in the back of your mind, and now that it's actually over and it's done, it's not a load off my back but I can relax. The last few days have been very tense for me."
"The first wave I went down in the first heat my legs were shaking, I'm not gonna lie, I'm just happy it worked out, had faith and got the job done."
Bernd Roediger produced one of the performances of the day in the battle for second and third against Kauli Seadi (JP / Hot Sails Maui / MFC). The AWT Champion landed the move of the day as he rotated through an amazing taka right in the critical section of the wave, which was received with rapturous applause on the beach. Seadi combined showcased his unique flowing style, but it wasn't enough against an on fire Roediger, who set up a finale against Levi Siver.
Winners' Final
Levi Siver faced Bernd Roediger, who was looking for a record equaling third victory at Ho'okipa at the age of just seventeen. However, Roediger will have to wait a little longer before making that a reality after Siver gave a master class in wave selection, and execution, in light winds and tricky waves. Siver's wave of the heat consisted of a big gouging top turn, straight into a trademark aerial, before adding two more vertical hacks to earn 8.38 points from the judges. Roediger knew that he needed to go big, but after a monumental effort against Seadi, he couldn't quite replicate the same level of performance, which soon resulted in a clearly delighted Siver being revealed as the JP Aloha Classic Champion.
Prior to that Morgan Noireaux (JP / Hot Sails Maui / Maui Ultra Fins) demonstrated his full potential as he defeated the newly crowned world champion, Marcilio Browne. Noireaux showed brilliant rail-to-rail wave riding, which was duly received by the judges, as well as boosting two aerials off lip on the same wave. Unfortunately though the Hawaiian tweaked his foot on his final wave of the heat, which ultimately led to his retirement from the competition mid way through the next heat against Roediger.
The Prestigious 2013 JP Aloha Classic Champion Levi Siver :
" I don't know what to day, I'm lost for words and I'm humbled and I'm so thankful to all you guys. I look out to this crowd and there's a lot of friends who are happy for me and that just makes everything so much better. Thanks everybody. Aloha."
