I think the printing techniques were not very HD 50 years ago, also the paper was not so good for high detail photographs. Scanning old newspapers and magazines sometimes results odd looking images.
Hovercrafts are truly amazing vehicles: Whether on land, water, mud or ice, these air-cushioned craft rule the unpaved wilderness. And they were born from a wildly optimistic and experimental era of engineering—as reflected by these incredible early prototypes and designs.
In my opinion those guys at JPL are all heroes. Not the way like Gagarin, Titov, Shepard, Armstrong etc-etc were, but pinpoint soft landing a huge robot onto Mars no less heroic than orbiting a couple of times around the Earth in a shiny spacecraft.
Unmanned missions have their human heroes also, just remember Mohawk Guy and his company. Also I hope our kids will ride machines like Curiosity, soft land probes like Huygens in VR, and that's gonna be awesome and heroic as well.
