2013 NGM Sleepover logo

The 20th annual nationwide Girls Ministries Sleepover, held September 27-28 at churches across the country, was by all accounts an exciting and festive affair this year. The Sleepover, which offered clubs the option of using a fun carnival/county fair-themed event, saw thousands of girls come for the fun and to help raise money for this year's Coins for Kids project — Hope for Venezuela — benefiting an orphanage in Venezuela.

One part of the annual Sleepover is "call-in" — this year referred to as a "telethon." Volunteers manned the phones on a live set and video feeds from the telethon went out online for Girls Clubs across the nation to interact with. Clubs called in at a pre-determined time to report how much they raised so far for the annual Coins for Kids project and have a chance to win a $500 Gospel Publishing House/My Healthy Church gift certificate (won by Lifehouse Church in Hagerstown, Maryland).

According to Kelly Morris of AG National Girls Ministries (NGM), this year more than $25,000 in offering and pledges was given for Samuel's House during the telethon. In comparison, last year, a little more than $17,000 was given during the call-in. Morris says that participation was also up, as more than 4,700 girls and 1,200 leaders reported their participation; last year, just over 2,550 girls and leaders reported participating.

"Some clubs use this event to reach out to other girls in their church or even to invite friends," says Pam Milbrath, South Texas Girls Ministries district director, who traveled to Springfield, Missouri, just to help with the telethon. "However, even if a club isn't very large, they can do big things."

Milbrath uses Praise Assembly in North Little Rock (Arkansas) as an example. The Girls Club had just four girls attend its Sleepover, but they gave $300 to the Coins for Kids project.

Morris points out that another Girls Club at Lansing First AG in East Lansing, Michigan, decided to make crafts during their Sleepover and then sell them the following Sunday, and give the proceeds to Coins for Kids.

"Sleepover is a wonderful time for both girls and leaders," Morris says. "It's a night of fun combined with a night of compassion for kids who need Jesus."
