Light winds, relatively calm seas and bright Italian sunshine enabled PRO Hank Stuart, with impeccable Race Committee support provided by Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS) to fire off three races on Friday. Each race presented a unique winner, making for a total of four complete at the 2013 Melges 32 World Championship, hosted by the Yacht Club Porto Rotondo (YCPR) in coordination with B.Plan Sports & Events (BPSE) and Melges Europe.
Emirates Team New Zealand came within one nautical mile of winning the 34th America's Cup today, but then fell afoul of the 40-minute time limit. When Race 13 was re-sailed, the Kiwis were thwarted by a penalty and good speed from defender ORACLE TEAM USA.
After only one race the 2013 Melges 32 World Championship looks to International Class Vice Chairman Richard Goransson and tactician Hamish Pepper aboard Helly Hansen Inga From Sweden for overall event leadership.
