Book Description

He had known this day would come. No man could escape the entire might of the Sovran forever. He just found it humorous that it was an enemy of the Sovran that had caught him instead.

Bound, kneeling before a queen whom he had hounded for a straight year, he should have been anxious. Or at least a little worried. Instead, a strange sense of relief filled him. It was over. His mad escape from Brindisi’s justice was over.

“That is a very calm expression on your face, General Darius Bresalier,” she observed. Her tone was idle, but her eyes were as sharp as a hawk’s. “Are you not worried?”

“I knew what the punishment would be, Your Most High Majesty,” he answered respectfully. “I have had a year to resign myself to my fate. I cannot complain.”

She gave a low, musical hum of approval. “Well said. I have heard many reports on what you did but never once did I believe I could have the full tale.” She leaned forward, causing the silk pillows behind her to slide in every direction. “Kingslayer, tell me. Why did you kill your king?”

5.0 out of 5 stars Hooray for new friends July 4, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
For me, the most important part of a story are the characters. You can have a well thought out story line, perfect pacing, impeccable grammar, but if your characters are not alive then the story is dead. The story is driven by the characters. The words they speak, the actions they take, the interactions they have. That is where the story comes from.

That is what makes a difference, to me, between a good story and a great story. The stories I love most and hold dear to my heart are the stories where I don't just view it as a book but I see the characters as old friends.

Honor seems to have mastered the ability of crafting "old friends" that you just want to sit down and have coffee with. Characters that you grow to love. This book is no exception. I read through it hungry for more, ready to turn the next page. Even with a victorious ending it left me saddened because I wish I could have spent more time with them. That is what makes a story great and this story is great indeed. I don't come across these very often.

If you want a story that can keep you up through the night, this is one. We can all learn a little something from Darius.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another winner by Honor July 6, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
As delighted as I was to see another book by Honor Raconteur on the Kindle marketplace, that delight was soon overshadowed by the pure pleasure I got from reading Kingslayer.

In all honesty, the plot summary did not engage me as much as her previous books, but trusting the author was the right thing to do. All the pieces of an Honor Raconteur story were strongly evident from the well developed characters to the quick and exciting plot. As with most of Honor's books, I spent most of my time smiling and giggling...a great way to pass a Saturday afternoon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Yet Again July 3, 2013

As a warning to anyone planning on reading this, look over the vocabulary list for this book. The new vocabulary was one of the best parts about this book. The new words gave a whole new feeling to the book that I have not felt elsewhere. This book is great on war scenes, yet it still appeals to those who want a more easy reading love story. Overall this book satisfies you and makes you want a sequel. This book has well thought out characters, almost like they made themselves. Also one of the characters has a slur and is confusing at first. This book, as all the other, does well in absorbing the reader and put them in place of the main character. Great job yet again Honor.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun and Creative Read July 31, 2013

I truly enjoyed this book and so did my 18 year old son. It was fast paced and entertaining. The characters were believable and some very good points about honor and trust were made that made me glad my son read the book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good, but... July 16, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I really enjoyed this book. It was a quick, fun read. The only issue I had with it was that Honor really neglected the battle scenes in the book. Which was also the issue that I had with her Advent Mage books. There are many scenes in this book where the main character leads his men into battle but there is no real feel of being in the conflict. There are no real descriptions of the hundreds and even thousands of deaths on the battlefield. I'm not looking for gruesome but if you're going to do battle scenes you have to be able to describe them correctly. You have to hear the thunder of hooves, the clash of shields, you have to mention the bodies of the fallen and what happens to the injured. Why didn't the general visit the injured after battle, why was he smiling as his men were dying on the field? No General that really cared for his men would do that even if he was winning the battle. Ok that's the end of my rant. I really thought this book had the potential to be amazing, the author just needed to be willing to get her hands dirty. I'd really give it three and a half stars if I could.

3.0 out of 5 stars 100 Pages Short August 3, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This read like the outline of a spectacular book. The foundation is strong, honor bound general who takes oaths serious and is willing to live with the cost, however high. Besiege land who's leader puts the needs (survival of her people) above revenge or political pandering. Great true friends who recognize another's humanity.

The elements are in place for a great story but I felt everything was resolved too easy or fast.

Questions unresolved for me:
What happened on protagonist journey to new lands, close calls, fights, friends?
Was the queens decision hard, how did she process the decision?
Why did the new generals follow him?
What were the motivations of generals who would not follow him, their perspective?
Brohm, can he even fight....? What were his motivations, why did he laugh when it his former master was mentioned?

All of the fighting was resolved too quickly except the two vs. duel
All of the actual battles were resolved without much detail. The planning and strategic moves were explained in great detail, but no attention was paid to the pieces. The best way I can explain is the battles were like a RTS (Real Time Strategy) game where you examine the landscape, your opponents pieces, and direct your pieces to win. I don't need blood and gore at 5 feet but the battles were portrayed at 50,000 feet. This makes sense in war terms, a general considers the whole, not individual skirmishes but the primary adversity faced by the protagonist centered mainly around grooming and sleep habits.

Perhaps the lack of adversity for the protagonist ended up being my main concern. 3 (technically 4) duels and an assignation attempt and never a moment of doubt on the outcome. No one was better skilled than expected, no one was more or less loyal than expected, no one had hidden motives, no one struck at a weakness, everyone did exactly what was expected, always. There were ZERO plot twist or surprises
