Book Description

Previously Available as The Suicide Effect

Sula Moreno knows too much. Working in public relations at Prolabs Pharmaceutical, it’s her job to put a positive—and profitable—spin on the company’s products. That includes the exciting new antidepressant Nexapra, the linchpin in a corporate merger that will save the faltering Prolabs from going under. But when Sula discovers the shocking truth about a lethal flaw in the drug, there’s no good way to spin the potential death of millions of consumers.

Karl Rudker, the company’s ruthless CEO, disagrees. To safeguard Prolabs’s bottom line—and his own place at the top—he’ll do whatever’s necessary to keep the facts about Nexapra’s dangerous side effects secret, even if it means putting an end to more than just Sula’s job. And when the only other person who can expose Rudker ends up murdered, Sula knows her boss is playing for keeps. But she also knows taking on her psychopathic superior is the only way to stop a fatal drug from flooding the market…and unleashing a wave of death.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book, not perfect though July 13, 2011
By bugga
Format:Kindle Edition
I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my review of the book. This was my first time to read a book by this author. I enjoyed the book very much. It wasn't perfect -- there were a few situations where I felt the characters did not act in a believable fashion. A few small errors in descriptions of drugs and their mechanisms of action (Can't help but be critical there, I am a pharmacist!) However, overall it was an easy enjoyable read. I wouldn't say I was enthralled with it, but if offered another complimentary copy of a book by this author to review, I would probably do it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Suspenseful plot. Abrupt ending. Terrible editing. November 27, 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
First book on my Kindle. Enjoyed the book very much but every time I stumbled on an editing issue, I was distracted from the story line. Nails on chalkboard! I will still consider reading another book by this author though.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Suicide Effect November 27, 2010
Format:Kindle Edition
Coming from a difficult past, Sula is finally achieving respectability. She works in the P.R. department for the pharmaceutical company, Prolabs, and is striving to regain custody of her small son.

But her plans are derailed when she discovers the company's new antidrepressant drug, Nexapra, has proven fatal for some Hispanics involved in the drug study. She hopes someone higher up will come forward with this information, but after that proves to be impossible, Sula becomes involved in seeking the truth about Nexapra and bringing it to light.

Soon her job is on the line, then her life, as she deals with Prolabs' arrogant CEO, Karl Rudker. He has too much to lose if Sula succeeds and he is determined that she won't.

Sellers has created an intriguing premise, a strong female protagonist, and a complex villain. Definitely worth reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read November 2, 2010
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
It took me less than 6 days to read through all 6 of Sellers books. I usually don't read through books that quickly unless they are that good (Evanovitch, Grafton, Connelly, Crais, Jance). I put this author right up there.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Suicide Effect June 23, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my review of the book. This was my first time to read a book by this author. I shall start by outlining a couple of the things I disliked or felt could be improved in the book. I would have liked a little more twists and turns in the story line. I also felt the dialogue between characters could have been fleshed out a little more. Some of the dialogue between characters was too abrupt and short. A couple of times I felt some instances in the book were a little far-fetched e.g. the main character forgetting that her friend was a reformed computer hacker. These were only minor dislikes however and I liked a lot about the book, the short chapters being one aspect. The main plot of the book was good and the topic of a large pharmaceutical company testing drugs was an interesting one. I also enjoyed the author's style of writing and the storyline held my attention throughout. Whilst the story did start off somewhat slow it soon gained pace and momentum, which then continued right to the end. At times the book reminded me of the Millenium Trilogy e.g. the strong female character with a problematic past, the investigative journalism aspect of the book and the computer hacking. The main characters in the book were strong, both the good and bad ones and there were just the right number and type of additional characters to compliment the story in the book. Overall, I would recommend reading the book. It is a good quick read. Based on the review above I have given the book a respectable 3 stars. I shall certainly check out more by this author in the future and will read the Detective Jackson series.

I have re-read this book two more times and can't say enough about how well reseach the author did to make the book believable.

The Suicide Effect is the first book by L.J. Sellers that I have read and it came to me as a complimentary copy from Bookrooster.com in exchange for my personal review. The author, L.J. Sellers, presents a case for stricter guidelines for drug testing and record keeping in this thriller. Sula is the PR person at a pharmaceutical company where she is attempting to put some order back in her life after making mistakes that put her little boy in a foster home.

The suspense begins in the first 5 pages when she suspects the director of the company of covering up a serious side effect of a new antidepressant drug. Antidepressants are one of the fastest growing markets in the world. This drug company knows that most of us want a quick fix and pay little attention to reported side effects.

From the onset Sula only desires order in her life so that she can get her little boy back. Instead she becomes a fugitive, moving her life into more chaos as she decides to expose the fatal side effect of this drug. The book moves the reader forward with short chapters and interesting characters.

The Suicide Effect will have you on the edge of your seat and making quick trips to the bathroom as you turn the pages, getting deeper into Sula's hopeless situation. This book is a wakeup call for those of us looking for a quick fix. If you love suspense thrillers or know someone who is on antidepressants this book is a must read for you.

This book is interesting in places and prosaic in others. It is a good casual read. The ending was not developed as much as it could have been.
