Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship 2006
Athlete Participation Programme
Taking place from 13-20 July 2006 in Weymouth, Great Britain, the Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship is set to host a spectacular event in a custom built venue with the ISAF Athlete Participation Programme, for the fourth consecutive year, providing support to sailors from emerging sailing nations to enable them to participate.
As in previous years the World Youth Sailing Trust will be funding the appointment of Jim SALTONSTALL as the Championship coach, and the Royal Yachting Association will be providing two additional coaches thereby ensuring that there will be one coach on each of the three course areas during racing, making them better able to give that all important de-brief at the end of each day's racing.
The ISAF Youth World Sailing Championship has been held annually since 1971, and has taken place in cities all over the world, Marathon - Greece, Rhode Island - USA, Capetown - South Africa, Sydney - Australia and Busan - Korea to name just a few.
Since 2002 the Athlete Participation Programme has enabled 77 sailors from all five continents to attend the Championship.
2006 sees a continuation of this programme and the long term funding aspect of it enables developing countries to plan their participation and prepare their
teams for future Youth Worlds, secure in the knowledge that funding will be available for them. Puerto Rico for example, as they will be taking part for the fourth consecutive year with help from the Athlete Participation Programme.
We are delighted to welcome Barbados, Jamaica and Pakistan to The ISAF Youth World Championships for the first time, and welcome back to Columbia after a 12 year absence.
ISAF will be providing travel and entry fee subsidies for Athlete Participation Programme Sailors, with the accommodation, food and airport shuttle service included in the entry fee. All equipment will be provided with the exceptions detailed in the Notice of Race which will soon be available on the Event Website.
