'Pretty Little Liars' 'Guilty Girl's Handbook': Mona steps up ... in a big way

We'll confess to not seeing the ending to "Pretty Little Liars" latest episode coming at all. But we definitely are not surprised in the least.

Ashley/Hanna/Mona

Hanna has the spectacularly bad idea that she's going to take the fall for her mom, claiming she actually killed Wilden in self-defense. And let's be real -- the only Liar who could remotely pull something like that off is Spencer.

After some excellent coaching from Mona -- the only one who has actually lived in a lie -- Hanna seems, well, still not ready. It seems like it's going to backfire miserably, so thankfully Caleb is there to rein Hanna in.

Then awesomely, it's Mona who walks sassily into the police station and confesses, providing the Liars with an enigmatic smile at the end. Mona rules all. Mona should be in every episode and the show should be retitled "Mona and Some Other Girls. »

'Big Brother 15': Candice, Amanda and Spencer lose their minds

It's a drama-filled week in the "Big Brother 15" house. This cast is not made up of the best gamers, but they sure are entertaining. Sign up for the live feeds to watch it all for yourself, because if today is any indication, tomorrow should be even more fun.

The blow-up started around 12:30 Pt with Spencer and Amanda having a go at each other. It's no secret they are not friends -- Amanda thinks Spencer is a gross perv and Spencer thinks Amanda is a "whore" (his words) who his running the whole house.

Aside from the whore part, they're both right. And the fight breaks out because Spencer is desperate to keep Howard in the house and Amanda is freaking out about being on the block. Her paranoia level is through the roof and they both just kind of yell at each other for a while. It's a good one. »

'Capture' review: 'Hunger Games' minus murder on CW's summer reality curio

"The Hunger Games" would be a natural fit for reality TV, except for -- you know -- murder. So, instead of a competition involving pretty people killing each other, The CW gives us "Capture" -- a competition involving pretty people basically playing an elaborate game of hide and seek in the woods.

The set-up involves twelve teams of two and in each episode a different team is designated as "Hunters." They're tasked with "capturing" two other teams who -- if caught -- will be put up for elimination decided by a majority vote. If the Hunters don't fulfill their duties, they're put up for elimination or eliminated outright. The teams trying to evade capture can't stay in one place for long, because if they're stagnant for more than three minutes they'll pop up on the Hunters' Gps devices. Adding to the challenge: every week the "arena" gets smaller and smaller. »

Anna Torv, Jennifer Jason Leigh to join Ryan Murphy's HBO pilot, 'Open'

Actors Anna Torv and Jennifer Jason Leigh have joined Ryan Murphy's upcoming HBO pilot, "Open." The two women will play lesbian partners in the edgy potential show.

Leigh will play Holly, a yoga instructor who starts to feel attracted to another woman, Grace (a part that has not yet been cast), even though she is in a long-term relationship with Holly, played by Torv. Holly, meanwhile, is perhaps more dedicated to her acting career than concerned about the relationship.

The two new hires will join previously cast actors Wes Bentley and Scott Speedman in the pilot. Murphy co-created the show with Lauren Gussis ("Dexter"). Leigh has been a prominent film and television actress since the 1980s, most recently recurring on shows like "Revenge" and "Weeds." Torv, an Australian actress, is best-known for playing Agent Olivia Dunham on the science-fiction series, "Fringe."

'Dexter' spinoff still a possibility at Showtime, plus 'Penny Dreadful' and more news

Talk of a possible "Dexter" spinoff started to make its way around the Internet as the show's final season approached, but it has died down some since.

Showtime Entertainment president David Nevins reignited it in a big way Tuesday (July 30) at the TCA summer press tour. Asked if a spinoff was still under consideration, he replied, "Of course."

"We just signed a two-year deal with [executive producer] Scott Buck," Nevins says. "Draw your own conclusions."

Buck's two-year overall deal includes executive producing the pilot "American Dream Machine" with "Dexter" star Michael C. Hall and other projects. It sounds like that might include a "Dexter" spinoff.

More news from Showtime:

- Josh Hartnett and Eva Green will star in the cable channel's horror series "Penny Dreadful," which is slated to premiere next spring. Hartnett plays an American performer living in late 19th-century London who has an "intense dark side," according to Nevins. Green »

'Masters of Sex': Michael Sheen, Lizzy Caplan explore the science of sexuality

Showtime is no stranger to dealing with the subject of sex, but the network has never done so in such a scientific way as it is with "Masters of Sex." The new drama tells the story of William Masters (Michael Sheen) and Virginia Johnson (Lizzy Caplan) as they spearhead forward-thinking research about sex and the way it affects the body. "Masters of Sex" explores both their personal lives and their professional research, and does so in a dramatic and sometimes comedic way.

"Masters of Sex" had its first TCA panel on July 30, and Sheen, Caplan, Nicholas D'Agosto, Caitlin FitzGerald and Teddy Sears were on-hand along with creator Michelle Ashford and executive producer Sarah Timberman. They discussed the way "Masters of Sex" will set itself apart.

"Their story is fascinating," Ashford says of Masters and Johnson. "We've stuck to the facts very carefully. Certainly the research, we've fudged none of that. »

Will Arnett: 'Arrested Development' Season 5 won't leave Lucille Austero's fate 'unanswered'

It's no secret that "Arrested Development" could get a Season 5, though whether it ends up happening depends on the schedules of the cast. At least there is a story to tell, as Season 4 ended on some pretty major cliffhangers.

One of those big storylines left open was the fate of Liza Minnelli's character Lucille Austero. There's been some speculation that "Arrested Development's" next iteration will be a murder mystery, which Will Arnett says he'd love to see happen.

"Put it this way, we're not going to leave it unanswered," Arnett tells Zap2it at CBS' TCA party of Lucille's open-ended storyline.

So will Season 5 actually happen? Arnett was careful not to give any details away and make it clear that everything's still up in the air. "No details on that," he says. "We've just got to work out whether it's going to happen and make sure that we »

'The Tomorrow People': Greg Berlanti and Julie Plec bring sci-fi to The CW

For all the fantasy on The CW, there hasn't been much science fiction. "The Tomorrow People" may begin to change that. The show's cast and producers made it seem likely at the TCA summer press tour on Tuesday (July 30).

Produced by Greg Berlanti ("Arrow," "Smallville"), Julie Plec ("The Vampire Diaries," "The Originals") and Phil Klemmer, this update of a '70s British cult show stars Robbie Amell (cousin of "Arrow" star Stephen Amell) as one of a group of young adults who represent the next stage in human evolution.

Think "X-Men." Only without the silly costumes.

The "Tomorrow People" panel featured, in addition to the producers and Amell, stars Luke Mitchell, Peyton List, Mark Pellegrino, Madeleine Mantock and Aaron Yoo.

Much like the series upon which "The Tomorrow People" is based, the titular heroes are people who have evolved to have powers like telekinesis, telepathy and teleportation -- don't worry, »

'Capture' premiere: 'Hunger Games' meets 'Lord of the Flies' for The CW

In a world crying out for peace, love and understanding, The CW has instead decided to play a game of deep-woods high-tech tag that's way more "Hunger Games" than "Kumbaya" around the campfire.

Premiering Tuesday, July 30, the competitive reality series "Capture" sends 12 teams of two into the Arena, a fenced-in enclosure -- totally wired for video and sound, and rigged with a variety of ways to sabotage the competitors -- in a remote forested area of California.

The teams must live there for a month, trying to survive on meager rations while aiming to hunt one another down and affix magnetic hockey-puck-sized "talons" to their rivals (a more humane alternative to paintball guns, or bows and arrows).

Along the way, the Game Master (Australian outdoorsman and shark expert Luke Tipple) alters the environment to make things even more interesting.

This is all in pursuit of a $250,000 grand prize.

Tipple tells Zap2it that for him, »

'The Originals' Ep Julie Plec on differences from 'The Vampire Diaries,' plus crossover potential and Season 1 scoop

Though "The Originals" began as a spinoff of The CW's uber-successful "The Vampire Diaries," don't think that you have to watch one to enjoy the other. Executive producer Julie Plec assured the room of journalists at The CW TCA press tour on Tuesday (July 30) that "The Originals" will be its own show independent of "Tvd."

"We just had an audience grow up with us for four years on 'The Vampire Diaries.' That show set the stage of a coming of age story cemented in the idea of first love and the struggle with becoming a vampire," Plec said. "This is a show not about struggling to be a vampire. It's about embracing vampirism and reveling in it. It's about the power of the family community and the power struggle over the family community and the supernatural community and an entire city. We like to look at it as like »

'Homeland': Howard Gordon on Carrie's unique Season 3 journey

On the surface, Carrie Mathison's journey in "Homeland" Season 3 looks similar to what's come before. She again gets thrown under the bus by the CIA and again is off her meds, but producer Howard Gordon promises that this new chapter in Carrie's story will be different than the ones told in Seasons 1 and 2.

"It really has everything to do with Carrie's mental state and where that leaves her, and that betrayal and her helplessness sort of in the wake of what happened last year," he tells Zap2it at Showtime's TCA press day. "It's more of an emotional ripple of that primary event."

During "Homeland's" TCA panel, Claire Danes seemed to suggest that Carrie only gets reincorporated with the bulk of the show's cast around episode 6. Though Gordon wouldn't confirm that's the case, he did say that Carrie's separation is another example of what keeps "Homeland" interesting.

'Deadliest Catch' Season 9 finale: Jake Anderson, forever the 'greenhorn'

When fans of the reality hit "Deadliest Catch," airing Tuesdays on Discovery Channel, first met deckhand Jake Anderson, he was a wide-eyed greenhorn (rookie fisherman) coming aboard the F/V Northwestern to catch crab in Alaska's Bering Sea.

Under the tutelage of Capt. Sig Hansen and his younger brother, deck boss Edgar Hansen, Anderson endured the losses of his sister and father, matured into a full-share deckhand and deck boss in his own right, got married, and earned the licenses necessary to perhaps one day become a skipper.

But not all fans have caught up with Anderson's accomplishments.

"I think I will always probably be kind of the underdog, the greenhorn," Anderson tells Zap2it. "I've been fishing crab alone for eight years, and I've always been in that position of being a greenhorn.

"Especially with television and media ... if you talk to another guy who's been fishing crab for eight years, »

'Arrow': The Black Canary's identity revealed

In the "Arrow" world, there have been few characters as eagerly anticipated as the Black Canary. Originally thought to be the future of Laurel Lance (Katie Cassidy), it now seems that the character will be played by Caity Lotz.

But who is the Black Canary, really?

According to an article posted by E!Online, Lotz will play Laurel's sister. Is this the presumed-drowned Sara Lance back from her watery grave? Is there another sister?

Watch the "Arrow" video that revealed the Black Canary here.

The comments on the matter, coming from CW president Mark Pedowitz, don't really clarify this.

"I hope she brings a certain amount of conflict since she's playing the sister of Laurel Lance," Pedowitz said at the TCA press tour.

Unfortunately, Pedowitz would neither confirm nor deny that Lotz's character -- presumed by many to be the Black Canary -- is the tough young woman seen in »

'Reign': The CW's period drama uses history loosely

If there's a takeaway from the TCA press tour session for The CW's "Reign," it's that while you may enjoy the show, you probably shouldn't use it as source material for a history report on Mary, Queen of Scots.

The show is set in the 16th century and traces the broad outlines of Mary's (Adelaide Kane) life, picking up when she arrives at the French court as a teenager as the intended bride of Prince Francis (Toby Regbo). But as executive producer Laurie McCarthy puts it, "We're not telling a historical drama. We're telling a fictionalized account of Mary's life."

"I think there is a certain amount of latitude in terms of dramatizing events," McCarthy ("Ghost Whisperer") says. "You see portraiture of the time, and you read books ... and there are many things that happened that never made it onto the pages of history. I also wondered, what was the »

ABC Family renews 'Switched at Birth' for Season 3, orders additional episodes of 'Twisted' and 'The Fosters'

ABC Family's summer lineup will remain in tact as the season ends, as the cabler has announced a Season 3 order for "Switched at Birth," as well was additional episode orders for newbie series "The Fosters" and "Twisted."

"It's thrilling to count our two freshman series, 'The Fosters' and 'Twisted,' among our stable of strong, must-see, must-tweet series," Kate Juergens, executive vice president of original programming and development at ABC Family, said in a statement on Tuesday (July 30). "'Switched at Birth' is like no other show on television and we are so proud to have it as a part of our family. Adding additional seasons and episodes of our returning series spotlights how well our programming resonates with our audience."

All three shows will premiere alongside fellow returning series "Pretty Little Liars" in January 2014.

'Nikita' ending, 'Beauty and the Beast' changes and more from the CW president

From his entrance to "Supernatural"-friendly classic rock to his final comics-based answers, CW president Mark Pedowitz had plenty to share about his network. Find out details about "Nikita," "Beauty and the Beast" and more here.

"Nikita"

Rumors have indicated that the final six episodes of "Nikita" will air as three two-hour blocks. That's not the case, according to Mark Pedowitz. At least the first four episodes of Season 4 will air separately. The finale might combine two episodes for a two-hour event, but that's it.

Fans can watch for "Nikita" to return some time in mid-November.

What's up with the "Supernatural" spinoff? Find out here.

"Beauty and the Beast"

The show's main parts -- particularly the star-crossed romance of Cat and Vincent -- won't change but some other things will for Season 2. Behind the scenes, Brad Kern has joined the show as an executive producer. More visible for viewers will »

'Flash' spinoff from 'Arrow,' but no Wonder Woman soon

Is the Flash coming quickly to TV?

"Arrow" is only going into Season 2 this fall, but The CW is already looking into spinoff possibilities. If the network and DC Comics get their way, an implanted spinoff for the Flash comic-book character could appear in an upcoming episode.

The Wonder Woman series, "Amazon," however, seems to be on the back-burner for now.

The potential "Arrow" spinoff will focus on the "Flash" character from DC Comics. Dr. Barry Allen will appear in one or more episodes of Season 2, giving the origin story for the Flash that way. DC has signed off on the project, making it a strong possibility for an upcoming series.

Could there be more spinoffs? Pedowitz indicated that this could be the case. "We do want to expand on the DC universe. We think they're very rich characters," he said.

One character they're not rushing to bring to The CW? »

'Supernatural' spinoff: Monsters - but no Winchesters - in Chicago

A few more details about the potential "Supernatural" spinoff came out of the CW executive session at the TCA press tour on Tuesday (July 30). Network president Mark Pedowitz was asked about the show early on and was willing to share what he knew.

Alas for the "Supernatural" spinoiff, there aren't many details available yet. That would be because the development of any new series remains in the earliest stages. The spinoff will first appear as an episode implanted into Season 9 of "Supernatural" and will continue the parent series' focus on the fight between hunters versus demons, monsters and the like.

Unlike the constantly traveling "Supernatural," this spinoff will have a very set location: Chicago. There will be one other big change between the original and the spinoff as well -- none of the actors known from "Supernatural" are expected to appear regularly in the new series. CW's 'Capture': Host Luke Tipple previews how competitors regressed to 'primitive nature quite quickly'

When you put twelve teams of two teens in an outdoor arena for a month in a fight for survival, any feelings of friendship or loyalty are the first to go.

At the mercy of the Game Master, Luke Tipple, the teams compete against each other for scarce resources and a $250,000 grand prize on The CW's newest reality competition show, "Capture." Each week, one team is chosen at random to be the hunter and must find and capture two teams or face elimination themselves. Of the captured teams, the "safe" contestants vote on who goes home, leading to constant betrayals and back stabbing.

But even Tipple was shocked at how quickly the teams began stabbing each other in the back. Zap2it got the chance to sit down with Tipple before the series' premiere to discuss the teams' strategies, shocking alliances (or lack thereof), and how he had to put »

TV ratings: 'Bachelorette' rises Monday while 'Under the Dome' stays on top

Fast National ratings for Monday, July 29, 2013

Part one of "The Bachelorette" finale scored improved ratings Monday, helping ABC lead the night among adults 18-49. It did not, however, grow enough to push "Under the Dome" (which was down slightly) out of its perch as the night's top show across the board.

"The Bachelorette" also helped "Mistresses" improve a little on its performance from a week ago. NBC's "American Ninja Warrior" and "Get Out Alive with Bear Grylls" were both down a bit.

ABC (6.6 million viewers, 4.5 rating/7 share in households) edged CBS (6.5 million, 4.2/7) for the overall lead in primetime. NBC was a bit off the pace in third with 3.6 million viewers and a 2.1/4. Fox (1.5 million, 1.0/2) came in fourth, and The CW (725,000, 0.5/1) trailed.

ABC also led the 18-49 demographic with a 2.0 rating. CBS finished second in the demo with a 1.7, followed by NBC at 1.1. Fox posted a 0.5 and The CW a 0.2.
