Opening This Week - July 26
The Wolverine (2013)- Action | Adventure | Fantasy | Sci-Fi
Summoned to Japan by an old acquaintance, Wolverine becomes embroiled in a conflict that forces him to confront his own demons.
Director:James Mangold |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Pity that Darren Aronofsky moved on from directing the it-has-to-be-better-than-the-first outing for the Wolverine; Frank Miller's fan-choice comic book, which is the framework for the sequel, is rife with romantic melodrama, character building, and a bad/no-so-bad guy, Ken Harada, aka the katana-sword wielding Silver Samurai. By no means is James Mangold a weak alternative; it's more that Aronofsky's added luster could have helped remount the franchise.
The To Do List (2013)- Comedy | Romance
Feeling pressured to become more sexually experienced before she goes to college, Brandy Klark makes a list of things to accomplish before hitting campus in the fall.
Director:Maggie Carey |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Pitch Perfect and Easy A are the most recent, most successful high-school comedies, and we hope Aubrey Plaza's first leading-lady appearance meet that standard while delivering huge laughs, awkward moments, and creative uses of profanities. Maggie Carey, one of the people from Funny or Die Presents... directs from her own screenplay.
Blue Jasmine (2013) - [Limited]- Drama
A life crisis causes a woman to head to San Francisco, where she reconnects with her sister.
Director:Woody Allen |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Bradley Cooper almost signed on for a starring role in Woody Allen's latest assemblage, which finds the writer-director back in the States -- San Francisco to be exact, where Allen seems to be playing up both coastal and class issues as a posh Cate Blanchett tries to find her footing with sister Sally Hawkins in her shabby chic flat. We're not buying it on paper, but that's what we said before actually seeing the transportative Midnight in Paris.
The Time Being (2012) - [Limited]- Mystery
An artist meets a mysterious and wealthy benefactor and their relationship is not what it appears to be.
Director:Nenad Cicin-Sain |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Look closer ... and you should see more than Wes Bentley holding another camcorder in Nenad Cicin-Sain's first film. Seems like the writer-director has fashioned a mystery that has earned favorable comparisons to both Dorian Gray and Great Expectations. It so feels like a fall release to us; perhaps the studio is banking on word of mouth to keep the movie in theaters until then.
Tiny Times 1.0 (2013) - [Limited]- Drama | Romance
When four best friends try and move forward in their work and personal life, they realize that trying to live their life's dream is more difficult than they imagine -- especially in the high fashion world of Shanghai.
Director:Jinming Guo |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Compared to Hollywood and other corrupting Western influences, mainland China might be more concerned with author Guo Jingming's flourishing moviemaking career, as he turned his suite of novels into his native country's biggest box-office hit of 2013 -- and a sequel was pushed up from a December release to August.
Du zhan (2012) - [Limited]- Crime
A drug cartel boss who is arrested in a raid is coerced into betraying his former accomplices as part of an undercover operation.
Director:Johnnie To |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: The inexhaustible Johnnie To offers a procedural crime story that has earned top marks from his ardent supporters. We're going to go out on a stable limb and say that his audience has to be growing thanks to VOD. And we're just happy that he doesn't ever make Hollywood films.
Breaking the Girls (2013) - [Limited]- Crime | Thriller
Sara, a college student who was slandered by a classmate, finds herself framed for murder by Alex, who initially proposed the perfect, untraceable crime.
Director:Jamie Babbit |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Personally, Jamie Babbit's movies never push it far enough for me, whether she's working in comedy or thriller mode, and nowhere have I read any review that says Breaking the Girls does a good job at depicting what it takes to be the last lesbian co-ed standing here.
