Forecast update times

The maps (70,000 x twice per day) are loaded dynamically as they are produced to allow users to benefit from the production of the first day etc as soon as they are ready.

This means that during the production of the forecasts twice a day (morning and late evening) there is a brief overlap as the maps update, however the map times at the top right hand corner are always correct.

We have added a live link 'update times' (right hand side) that continually updates so you can see what days and parameters are being uploaded and what time they have completed. The 'in progress' maps may show as an overlap during this update period.

Forecast buttons

Seven kinds of forecast are available. Wind, Cloud, Temperature (incl of Isobars), Precipitation, Snow, Freezing Rain and Upper Air maps (700, 500 and 300hpa).

  Wind

The forecast shows wind velocity using coloured areas, where each colour stands for a particular range of wind speeds. The windspeed is also indicated by the size of the arrows. Wind speed in kilometres per hour is shown below the scale (0 .. 117). You can change to other scales using the drop down menu upper right.

  Cloud

The forecast shows cloud cover using white and grey coloured areas. Darker grey means more and heavier clouds accumulated over all altitudes. The wind arrows on the cloud maps give direction and force at 850 hPa. Refer to the wind maps to see the relation of force to arrow size.

  Temperature and Isobars

The forecast shows temperature using coloured areas, where each colour stands for a particular range of temperatures in degrees Celsius. Under Settings* you can change the scale to Farenheit. This will however not change the temperature numbers inside the circles or on isotherms which are always Celsius. The black lines are isobars with numbers in hPa.

  Precipitation (Rain, Snow, Freezing Rain)

The forecast shows rain usinga green scale, snow using a blue scale and freezing rain using a red scale. Darker colours within each scale mean more precipitation. The scale shows how the colours relate to precipitation in millimetres per hour or centimetres per hour for snow. The red lines are isotherms with numbers in degrees Celsius.'

  Upper air

Upper Air Maps Show wind strength and direction by the arrows at 700hpa, 500hpa and 300hpa. The yellow lines indicate the height in meters and the red lines indicate the temperature at that height.

Circles in maps

Each circle on a map stands for a specific city location. Click inside it and a meteogram with the name of that city will appear in the bottom left hand corner.
Click on the x box within the meteogram to cancel the meteogram. The numbers inside the circles indicate temperatures, always in degrees Celsius.

Animation functions

To animate a day's forecast, click the first bar of the required day and then click the play button >
To animate a six hour segment loop click the required animation bar segment.
For single hour by hour selection click the required animation bar segment and then <| or |> to stop the 6 hour animation and to move backwards or forwards hour by hour.

Meteograms

Meteograms consist of a combination of data: Temperature, wind, precipitation and cloud cover over a 6 day period noted on the horizontal base line.
Vertical dotted lines give 6 hour intervals. Wind is measured against the right hand green scale (km/h). Temperature is measured against left scale in celcius.

Precipitation types are measured in mm per hour. However Snow is measured in cm per hour.
