XVII Island Games
Ajaccio, Corsica

The XVII Island Games took place in the bay of Ajaccio, Corsica.
Thirty two optimist competitors representing the islands of: Malta, Jersey, Sardinia, Corsica, Sicily, Wight, Martinique, Cyprus and Elba, measured themselves in the fight for the 2013 podium.

The first two days of racing was in mostly light to moderate winds and short waves. Tricky wind shifts were on the cards as sailors calculated their best tactics. The last day there was no racing due to winds of more than 50kms.

A total of 5 races were sailed with one discard.

Of the nine islands represented, Sardinia walked away with the team prize followed by Sicily and third place was taken by Martinique.

In the boys group Onisiphoros Neophytou from Cyrpus was proclaimed champion with a total of 6 points, closely followed by Salvatore Sciuto from Sicily on 9 points and third place went to Simone Giraldo from Sardinia with 15 points.

In the girls group, Elisabetta Fedele from Sardinia with two bullets and two third places took the top spot on the podium. Lluzza Giuliana from Sicily came second with a total of 11 points and Georgia Constantinou from Cyprus with 14 points rounded up the podium.

This is a truly unique event, where participants must come from an island that belongs to a European country in order to compete.
