The thing I love about football, and it would be sacrilege to call it soccer, is that it runs in the blood of most every swede, and it is very much a part of the culture. One of the best parts about experiencing football in Sweden is that you can watch it in just about any public area and in the company of complete strangers and still have a good time. From the massive screens in bars to the game being projected on even bigger screens, it is enjoyed in several ways.

The quality of the teams, especially the Swedish team, is beyond compare — from each and every play and maneuver to the stories, sometimes even inside stories; it is all part of experiencing the game.

Besides the excellent teams playing in all seasons and all major games, football brings to the table a level of athleticism that is not really seen in other games. The teams, Swedish or otherwise, play for their colors, their jerseys and the honor of retaining their titles. There is a buzz each time a game is approaching, and it removes all cultural and social divides among the members of each team. The fans of each team become one as well; We forget our social status, cultures and race and all cheer for our favorite team.

There is a beauty in the way the game is played, from the good to the ugly it is all there. How many of us have watched the victorious team break down on the field and cry? What about all those victory dances that are choreographed for each of the goals scored. How livid coaches get when their prodigies miss a goal and how the only thing holding them back is the white line. Or how cinema halls suddenly take on the feel of stadiums with people wrapping flags around them and areas fill with the glorious chanting at each game.

It is a game that brings together nations –  schools and offices unofficially shut down for big games. Roads become empty as everyone goes home or to be with friends to watch the game. There are celebratory processions that are taken out on the streets after every major game.

Football is a game that has brought together nations, and it has served as a means of giving a large number of youth a safe pastime and a positive outlook on life.
