Events Introduction
In the last Seven years Pwllheli has hosted 4 World championships and 32 UK National championships, as well as staging many other smaller competitions. These events make an important contribution to the local community by raising the profile of the town and Lleyn in general as well as having a positive impact to the local economy.
Pwllheli has raised successfully the profile of Wales on the World Stage with entries from over 24 countries, including Argentina, Australia, Barbados, Belarus, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Dutch Antilles, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Malta, Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, Russia, South Africa, Spain, Sri Lanka, Switzerland, United Arab Emirates and USA.
The exceptional standard of the area’s sailing waters is recognised by LOCOG (the London 2012 Organising Committee) as the club has been included on the prestigious London 2012 Olympic Pre-Games Training Camp Guide. It is the only venue in Wales for the sport of sailing. Pwllheli had been chosen also as the sailing venue for the Manchester Olympic bids, which is testimony to the world class quality of the venue.
Pwllheli is recognised by the RYA as one of its four sea-based national sailing academies suitable for hosting international Olympic and
pathway youth and junior class competitions and is the only such facility in Wales. Pwllheli is the venue of choice in Wales for many class associations because of the excellence and convenience of the sailing area with minimal tidal influences and a short sail to the race areas. The sheltered beach launching is supported by a secure compound for storing dinghies and adjacent free car parking.
Pwllheli has a strong and experienced team of International and National and Race Officers, National and Regional Mark-Layers, RYA qualified Safety boat drivers and a shore-based team to ensure all events are managed in a professional and welcoming manner.
