The 2009 edition of Kieler Woche has proved to be incredibly testing for the Olympic and Paralympic sailors competing at the sixth event of the ISAF Sailing World Cup. Extremely light winds early this week mean a reduced programme has left the overall leaderboards wide open going into the Medal Races today. Along with ISAF Sailing World Cup medals, crucial points are up for grabs towards the World Cup Standings: the top 20 finishers in each event score World Cup points - 20 for first place; 19 for second; down to 1 points for 20th place.

The Medal Races today will take place on two courses, with the first warning at 11:00 local time (09:00 UTC). The forecast is looking good, with the sky clearing this morning and a good breeze over the race courses.

Men's 470

Sime FANTELA and Igor MARENIC (CRO) continued their winning streak from the recent 470 Europeans by claiming overall victory in Kiel this week. The Croatian pair are formidable opponenets in light winds conditions and ended as clear winners this week as the challenge from their closet rivals evapourated today. The young British team of Jonny MCGOVERN and Christian BIRRELL beat their team mate and reigning World Champions Nic ASHER and Elliot WILLIS (GBR) into third place.

Standings leaders Stuart MCNAY and William MCBRIDE (USA) did not make the Medal Race but eleventh place overall gives them another ten points to add to their total and maintain their position at the top. Matthias SCHMID and Florian REICHSTADTER (AUT) in seventh and ASHER and WILLIS pick up valuable points to close the gap on the top positions.

Finn

Rafal SZUKIEL (POL) took the the first ISAF Sailing World Cup gold medal of this year's Kieler Woche by winning today's Finn Medal Race, whilst Ed WRIGHT's (GBR) sixth place overall finish was good enough to secure him the title of 2009 ISAF Sailing World Cup Champion.

SZUKIEL excelled in today's race, with victory helping him edge ahead of Croatian star Ivan KLJAKOVIC GASPIC and take the gold medal by a single point. Estonia's Deniss KARPAK continued his impressive run of form since switching from the Laser to the Finn this year, with sixth place in today's race good enough for him to hold on to third overall.

The lack of wind and consequently races this week meant World Cup leader coming to Kiel, WRIGHT never had the chance to fully recover from a 19th place finish in the opening race of the series. Still the Brit clawed his way back up to sixth overall and the 15 World Cup points earned mean he now has an insurmountable 24-point lead in the World Cup Standings and is therefore the first sailor to be crowned ISAF Sailing World Cup Champion in the inaugural year of the new series. KLJAKOVIC GASPIC's second place finish in Kiel puts him second in the World Cup Standings, just ahead of Athens silver medallist Rafa TRUJILLO (ESP).

Laser

Olympic gold medallist Paul GOODISON (GBR) completed a perfect week in Kiel with victory in today's Laser Medal Race giving him a scorecard of six race victories from six and a third consecutive ISAF Sailing World Cup gold medal. In the race for second place Michael BULLOT (NZL) just pulled in ahead of Daniel MIHELIC (CRO), who in turn won bronze from Andreas GERITZER (AUT) on countback.

Finishing fifth overall the consistent Nick THOMPSON (GBR) maintains his lead of the World Cup Standings but is now just eight points ahead of MIHELIC with just the final event at Weymouth remaining.

Laser Radial

US skipper Paige RAILEY won her second gold medal of this year's ISAF Sailing World Cup, completing a dominant display in Kiel this week with a win in today's Medal Race. She beat Belgium's Evi VAN ACKER into second place with Olympic gold medallist and World Cup leader Anna TUNNICLIFFE (USA) taking third.

TUNNICLIFFE's bronze medal in Kiel, her fourth medal from the six World Cup events this year, helps her extend her lead in the World Cup Standings to a commanding 16 points with just one event to go. Croatia's Tina MIHELIC has been TUNNICLIFFE's closest rival all season and again put in a strong showing this week to take fifth overall and stay second in the Standings with RAILEY now up in third.

Women's 470

At their ISAF Sailing World Cup debut, Lisa WESTERHOF and Lobke BERKHOUT (NED) won the gold medal. They were rarely troubled in through this Kieler Woche and although they didn't win the Medal Race their overall win was by a whopping 11 points from the silver medal winning team from Denmark, Henriette KOCH and Lene SOMMER . The Medal Race winners were the young Australian sailors Stacey OMAY and Chelsea HALL and they finish fourth overall, just one place above their World Cup Standings position of sixth.

The podium in Kiel was completed by defending champions Ai KONDO and Wakako TABATA from Japan. The silver medal for Koch and Sommer extends their lead in the World Cup Standings from three points to 22 points, a healthy cushion before the season finale in Weymouth.

ISAF Sailing World Cup Standings - Women's 470

Star

In second place going into today's Medal Race, MARK MENDELBLATT and Mark Strube (USA) needed to finish ahead of Iain PERCY and Andrew Simpson to win the gold medal. Hamish PEPPER and Craig Monk (NZL) took the race win and with the USA team in second place they won the gold medal and another 20 points to add to their Standings. Percy and Simpson finished eighth in the Medal Race to end on equal points to Pepper and Monk but the Kiwis race win gives them the silver medal and the Brits the bronze.

Xavier ROHARTand Ponsot finished in 15th place and hold onto the top of the Standings by just one point. Emilios PAPATHANASIOU and Apostolos KARNOUTSOS (GRE) move up to second overall, tied on points with Alexander SCHLONSKI and Frithjof KLEEN. Only eight points separate the top 8 in the Star Standings illustrating the intense competition in this fleet.

49er

World Cup Standings leaders Paul CAMPBELL-JAMES and Mark ASQUITH (GBR) put in an emphatic performance to take the Medal Race win, after a bad day yesterday the needed the points to get back onto the podium. Finishing second were Lennart BRIESENICK-PUDENZ and Morten MASSMANN who secure their first ISAF Sailing World Cup regatta win and another 20 points to add to their Standings score. The race win gives Campbell-James and Asquith the bronze medal and it was Yann ROCHERIEUX and Morgan LAGRAVIERE (FRA) who claim the silver medal.

Campbell-James and Asquith, the only team to have competed at all six World Cup events so far maintain their lead at the top of the Standings with a ten point cushion from the second placed Alonso brothers from Spain. The last event in Weymouth is shaping up to be an exciting finale.

Men's RS:X

Przemyslaw MIARCZYNSKI (POL) finished as he began, with a race win, to take the gold medal with an outstanding 11 point lead from his nearest rival. Second in the Medal Race was Christian FREIMüLLER (GER) with Byunggun LEE (KOR) third but Toni WILHELM (GER) hangs onto the silver medal after finishing fifth.

The top of the Standings are not affected by he results from Kieler Woche as most of the RS:X fleet did not sail here so as the final event in Weymouth approaches, João RODRIGUES (POR) leads by two points from Dorian VAN RIJSSELBERGE (NED).

Women's RS:X

Moana DELLE (GER) did not look troubled throughout this Kieler Woche and the Medal Race was no exception today. With a clean sweep of race wins Delle put in another excellent performance to win the event and another 20 World Cup points. With the majority of the top ranked RS:X sailors not competing in Kiel, Delle's 20 Standings points move her up to fourth overall and in contention for an overall podium finish. Anna Galecka finished the Medal Race in second place to take the silver medal while Tuull Petaja (FIN) finishes third overall. Third in the Medal Race was Nikola Girke (CAN) and she finishes in sixth place overall to move up the Standings to eighth.

Blanca MANCHON is unbeatable at the top of the World Cup Standings but the challenge will be on for the final two podium positions in Weymouth.

Women's Match Racing

Katie Spithill and Nicky Souter progress to the final.

It went down to the wire in the final but the eventual winners were Katie Spithill, Nina Curtis and Nicole Douglass (AUS). Nicky Souter, Jessica Eastwell and Olivia Price (AUS) win second. The petit-final was won by Julie Bossard, Sophie D'Ortoli and Elodie Creac'h (FRA) so they win the bronze medal.
