Obituary

It is with great sadness ISAF reports that Paul Murphy (IRL), an ISAF International Judge, has died aged 61.
Paul has served as an ISAF International Judge since his first appointment in 2002, and was also a National Umpire and National Judge in Ireland.

He was well known to almost all sailors in Ireland having worked both on the water and ashore in his role as Judge for many classes. He is particularly well known for his work with the Laser and J/24 Class Associations and attended many of their national, European and World Championship events.

Along with his roles as an Umpire and Judge he served on the Irish Sailing Association (ISA) Racing Rules Appeal Board and also on the ISA Tribunal. He was a member of the National Yacht Club and Royal Alfred Yacht Club where he served as Vice Commodore until earlier this year and was particularly pleased to be involved in the Alfred's 150th anniversary celebrations in 2007.

Ed Alcock, Racing Manager at the ISA, paid tribute to Paul's great service to the sport, "Paul was assiduously fair in his interpretation and application of The Racing Rules of Sailing and frequently would go out of his way to help a young sailor to understand why he gave a penalty.

"In short, Paul served sailing and we salute him for that, he will be missed."

Paul passed away peacefully on Saturday 17 October. ISAF extends our sincere sympathy and condolences to his wife Ruth and their children Johanna, Michael and Oran, and also to his many friends in Ireland and around the world.
