Star South American Championship 2010
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Switzerland's Flavio Marazzi and Enrico De Maria won the Star South American Championship in Rio de Janerio, perfect preparation for the 2010 Worlds taking place in the same city in January.
A 70-boat fleet assembled in Rio de Janerio for the regatta. The regatta is viewed by all as the precursor for the 2010 Star World Championship, which will take place at the same venue in January.

Flavio Marazzi and Enrico De Maria's consistency enabled them to distance themselves from Alan Adler and Guilherme Almeida (BRA) by nine points leaving many teams to scramble for the other podium positions. Fewer than 20 points separated the second through ninth place teams.

The Swiss team has been ranked world #1 by ISAF since July. They placed eighth at the 2009 Star World Championship in Varberg, Sweden. Determined to win a Star World Championship, Marazzi and De Maria have been in Brazil, along with many international teams, practicing for a string of Brazilian Star regattas leading up to the upcoming World Championship.

Marazzi and De Maria were the only team whose scoreline was comprised completely of single-digit scores. They topped past Star World Champion skipper, Adler, sailing with Almeida. Adler, a stalwart promoter of Star sailing in Brazil and South America, was second.

This year's ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year, Torben Grael (BRA) and the man who has collected a number of trophies as his trusted teammate, Marcelo Ferreira (BRA), were third.

Two-time Star World Champion, Fredrik Loof, sailing with Johan Tillander (SWE) was fourth.

Lars Grael and Ronald Seifert (BRA), who were third at the 2009 Star World Championship and won the Royal Thames regatta that was held a week earlier in Rio, were fifth.

By finishing seventh overall, past Star World Champion, Canada's Ross Macdonald and crew, André Lekszycki were the top North Americans. Mark Mendelblatt and Mark Vonschwartz (USA) were eighth. Reigning Star World Champions, George Szabo and Rick Peters (USA) rounded out the top ten at the regatta.
