ISAF Annual Conference 2006
Helsinki, Finland

Today in Helsinki, Finland, equipment was the hot topic, with the classes coming under the spotlight at both the ISAF Women's Sailing Committee and the Equipment Committee. RS:X World Champion Alessandra SENSINI (ITA) was amongst the interested observers looking on.

One of the key issues at the Equipment Committee were the applications for ISAF Recognized and International Class status. The Committee gave their support to applications for International status by the RS:X and RS Feva classes, and for the X-35 keelboat to become a Recognized Class. The Committee will now pass their recommendations onto the ISAF Council, who will make the final decision on the applications.

Looking towards the London 2012 Olympic Games, the Committee gave their approval to Submission 079 to delete Regulation 16.1.6, which currently limits the classes from which ISAF can choose the equipment for the Olympic Games and Regional Games.

Ken KERSHAW also made a presentation on the ISAF In-House Certification programme, more information on which can be found on the microsite at www.sailing.org/ihc.

How The Conference Works
World Sailor Of The Year

The Women's Sailing Committee, chaired by Adrienne GREENWOOD (NZL), began their meeting with a detailed discussion on women at the Olympic Games, the possible choice of equipment and its affect on participation. Henry MENIN (ISV), the Chairman of the Match Racing Committee, made a presentation on women's match racing. Amongst the onlookers were women's match racing world number two, Lotte MELDGAARD PEDERSEN (DEN) and triple Olympic medallist SENSINI.

The Committee also looked at women's representation on Council, and the proposed methods of achieving a minimum of 20% women's representation. The Committee also decided to urge Council to encourage MNAs and Continental Associations to support the Brighton Declaration, which provides the principles to increase the involvement of women in sport across all areas.

The Audit Committee met to review the financial aspects of the federation, whilst the Racing Rules Committee went through a large list of submissions and will pass on their recommendations on rule changes to the Council.

The Team Racing Sub-Committee also met today in advance of tomorrow's major meeting of the Events Committee.

Tonight, the ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year Awards will celebrate a fantastic year in sailing and award a male and a female winner from the list of eleven nominees.
