2004 Optimist European Championship
Sandhamn

With one day to go in the OptiEuropeans and after four days of sailing and nine completed races, the heat is on.
The weather conditions are certainly different from one day to another, Wednesday bid north westerly around 16 knots which made it possible for four races. Tuesday was another day with only one race and a seven knot easterly wind.

Greek girl Afrodite KIRANAKOU is in the lead 13 points ahead of her compatriot Katerina KOUTSOUGERA who has 51 points. Afrodite scored her second victory today in the ninth race; her first was on Monday in the second race. In third place is Italian Federica WETZL who took her first victory in Tuesday's race. The leader from Tuesday, Agnieszka SKRZYPULEC (POL), is now on fifth place.

There is going to be a close race for the gold medal in the OptiEuropeans in the boys fleet, only four points separate leader Swede Nicklas DACKHAMMAR and second placed Wojciech ZEMKE (POL). The lead has been shifting between them during the day. Third overall is Alexander ZIMMERMANN (PER), but he is too far behind to displace Dackhammar or Zemke.

The schedule for the OptiEuropeans 2004 is twelve races. So far nine are completed, the weather forecast for Friday, the final day, is northerly winds between 16 - 26 knots which should mean 10 - 16 knots in the race area. If the weather forecast is true the Race officer plans for at least two more. In that case two races can be discarded with eleven completed according to sail instructions.
