Heading for Mizen

Orange Round Britain and Ireland Record Attempt

The Orange catamaran is heading for Ireland's most southerly point in its round Britain and Ireland record attempt.

The catamaran needs to reach Mizen Head by 2.10pm to be on course for Steve Fossett's record set in 1994.

With 99 miles to go, Orange was just under two hours behind the current record pace, but requires some high average speeds to get back on track and ahead of the pace.

Skipper Bruno Peyron says once Orange is past Mizen, 35-knot south westerly winds should power them very quickly up the west coast.

Peyron added that the 13-strong crew of Orange is looking forward to an exciting sail north in conditions where the boat will be very fast.

At 07:52 this morning Orange was charting a current course of 303 degrees at a speed of 17.3 knots, some 99 nautical miles from Mizen Head.
