The award was first presented in 1986 to America's Cup supporter Paul Phelan, who successfully organized a merger among Canada's top 12-metre syndicates.

Stephen Tupper (Vancouver, BC) Rolex Sailor of the Year

During his career, Stephen Tupper has successfully represented Canada in the top echelons of international sailing. As an athlete he earned a 4th in Olympic competition

(Dragon class), a Gold at numerous North American one-design Championships, and sailed for Canada in many prestigious regattas such as the Admiral's Cup, Kenwood Cup, and Sardinia Cup. Stephen was a successful Team leader and coach in 3 Olympics and 2 Pan American Games, a coach and organizer of Canada's Cup. He was also an International Jury Member in the Volvo Ocean race and other top international competitions, a builder through his active involvement with the

International Sailing Federation (ISAF) as the North American Council Representative, and a member of the ISAF Events committee. There is no doubt that Stephen Tupper has been and will certainly continue to be a key influence and contributor for sailing in Canada and internationally.

Jennifer Spalding, (Vancouver, BC) Female Athlete of the Year
Jennifer Spalding's numerous achievements in 2002 include becoming the first Canadian female to ever win the Volvo ISAF Youth World Sailing Championships in the Byte class.

Bernard Luttmer, (Toronto, ON) Male Athlete of the Year
Bernard Luttmer has risen to the top of senior Laser competition this past year and his behaviour and manner has set an example for other competitors.

Andrew Childs, (Halifax, NS) Marvin McDill Memorial Award

The Marvin McDill Award is presented annually to the athlete/crew with the best results at their first Open World Championship as a member of the Canadian Sailing Team.

Andrew Childs won this award for his very respectable 46th placing at the Laser Worlds.

Conner Higgins, (Toronto, ON) Bill Burk Memorial Youth Elite Trophy
Conner Higgins made his mark on the Canadian and international youth scene this past season, claiming the Laser title at the CYA Canadian Youth Championships and winning silver at the Radial Youth World Sailing Championships.

Richard Clarke, Gerry Roufs Trophy
This award is presented to the person whose achievement in international offshore racing has had significant impact on the recognition of sailing in Canada.

Richard Clarke was mainsheet trimmer and helmsman on Volvo Ocean Race winner Illbruck.

Kathryn Crowder (Hamilton, ON) Volunteer of the Year
The CYA Volunteer of the Year award was established in 1991 to recognize outstanding contributions by CYA volunteers.
Kathryn Crowder has been a truly amazing volunteer for many years in contributing to all aspects of the sailing community, from the grass roots club level to international events.

Kimberley Case (Kingston, ON) Coach Award of the Year
This award was established in 1998 to recognize an instructor/coach who has contributed to the advancement of sailing at the club/school level.

This award recognizes Kimberley Case as an excellent instructor and coach whose high level of professionalism has been a very positive role model in the sailing community.

Boat for Hope (Vancouver, BC) Recreation Event of the Year Award
The Recreation Event of the Year was established to recognize a club, an organization or an individual, that has contributed to the promotion of recreational sailing in Canada.

The Boat for Hope Foundation is committed to sharing the boating experience with special needs children everywhere.

Royal Hamilton Yacht Club (Hamilton, ON) William Abbott Senior Trophy
William Abbott Senior Trophy was presented to the Royal Hamilton Yacht Club in recognition of the many fine programs run by dedicated volunteers.

Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship (Lunenburg, NS) Chisholm Trophy for Excellence in Race Management and Regatta of the Year Award
The CYA Chisholm Trophy for Excellence in Race Management is in place to recognize the club or association that demonstrated excellence in a regatta held during the current year.

The Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship, hosted July 18-27 by Lunenburg Yacht Club, was an extremely well co-ordinated 10-day event which proved to be a true example and model for excellent regatta management, from the training and empowerment of local volunteers, to the overall preparation and actual competition.

The CYA Annual Awards were presented at the banquet held November 23rd, 2002 during the Annual Planning Conference.
