Clipper 2002 Round the World Yacht Race
Cascais

The Race Committee for the Clipper 2002 Round the World Yacht Race, chaired by Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, has awarded Liverpool Clipper 4.5 points for the first race of the eleven-month challenge.
The decision was taken after taking into account all the factors connected with Liverpool Clipper stopping racing for a period between 05:00 on 1, November and 18:44 on 3, November 2002 when she proceeded to Bayona to land an injured crew member.

A grand prizegiving reception, given by the Town of Cascais, took place on Thursday, 7 November where several sponsors of this spectacular visit were recognised and thanked at the Reception; namely Hyundai, Datacomp and Minolta.

Colin de Mowbray, Race Director, also presented copies of an antique chart of the area, dated 1806, from the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office to the Camara Municipal de Cascais and the Marina de Cascais in recognition of all the arrangements that have been made for the race.

Justin Taylor and the Hong Kong Clipper crew basked in their well-deserved glory, but they had to wait their turn. The first prize was awarded to Liverpool Clipper's Vicky Margerrison for being the first crew member to reach Cascais. Vicky was landed at Bayona and after a check up in the hospital, was driven to Cascais by the Assistant Race Director, Tim Hedges, in one of the Hyundai cars.

Roger Steven-Jennings, skipper of Cape Town Clipper, was next to receive a prize for his timely arrival in Cascais, completing the first race during the visit by the Portuguese media and securing excellent national coverage for Clipper 2002.

Clipper 2002 flags and pennants were awarded for third, second and first place to London, Jersey and Hong Kong respectively by João Sande E Castro on behalf of the Camara Municipal De Cascais, with additional prizes generously supplied by Hyundai, Marina de Cascais and the Town.
