Canadian Optimist Championship 2005
Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada

100 young optimist sailors are competing in Nova Scotia at the Canadian Optimist Championships 2005. In addition to athletes from nine Canadian provinces, there are sailors from Barbados, Bermuda, Germany, Mexico and the United States.
The athletes are divided into two fleets, championships and green. The green fleet has 28 sailors all of whom are novice racers.Racing was scheduled to begin on Sunday but the forecasted 10 to 15 knots did not materialise and the Race Committee abandoned all racing for the championship fleet after squeezing one in for the green fleet.

Light winds and fog continued to plague the Canadian Optimist Dinghy Championships at the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron yesterday but despite the less than ideal conditions, both the green and championship fleets completed races.

The green fleet, which includes the less experienced racers is sailing close to the club and managed to get five races off and the championship fleet managed two.

Leading the championship fleet is Julien FOUGERE (CAN) who finishd eighth in both races. Just one point back in second is Casper MACAULEY (CAN) who posted a first and a 16 to total 17 points. These two sailors have a substantial lead over third placed Thomas NICHOLSON (CAN) who has 32 points.

Alexander MUNN (CAN) leads the green fleet after six race after a dominant performance yesterday. Discarding a tenth on Sunday, MUNN took three bullets and two seconds yesterday to lead with seven points. In second place is Henry MACHUM (CAN) on 18 points, the only other sailor to win a race yesterday. Devan DUBE (CAN) is in third.
