The news was also bad for Jo BRIGG and Mary ROOK (GBR) who had lead this championship for the first few days. Going into the final day in third place overall just one point behind LUMEAU and BOSSARD and 24 points ahead of the next team they seemed assured of a podium posisiton. But it was not to be. BRIGG and ROOK scored a 15 and a 36 yesterday to end the championship with 103 points and in fourth place. Third place went to their team mates Maria STANLEY and Catherine ALTON (GBR) who have had a relatively inconsistent championship but ended it with a second and a sixth to climb up from fifth and take the final podium spot.

In the Open fleet Tomas O DA SILVA and Francisco GOMES (POR) went into the final day with an eleven point lead over the Spanish team of Alfredo CAPODANNO and Vittorio PAPA. The sailed a safe final day finishing second and ninth and thus claiming the title of 420 World Champions. CAPODANNO and PAPA didn't have such a good day with a 20 and a tenth but did enough to hang on to the silver medal position. New Zealand's Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship representatives Peter BURLING and Bruce KENNEDY had a final day shocker to slide from third overall to sixth whilst Pablo SANTURDE and Abelerdo QUEVEDO (ESP) snuck up the final podium position, despite not finishing race nine. With two discard kicking in a fourth in the final race left them tied on points with Thomas and Matthieu RAHIER (FRA). Two second place finishes to the RAHIER's one gave them the final podium spot.
The final race victory went to the Indian team of Farok TARAPORE and Vikas KAPILA who have had a particularly inconsistent series. Six top ten finishes in the final series should have been good enough for a podium spot but not combined with two DSQs and a DNF.
