Star Western Hemisphere Championship 2005
Nassau, The Bahamas

After two day's of racing in the ISAF Grade C1 Star Western Hemisphere Championship Americans Paul CAYARD and Brian SHARP lead the fleet by five points. Recent BACARDI Cup winners Mark MENDELBLATT and Mark STRUBE (USA) lie in third.
Day two of the Championship in the Bahamas saw races three and four of the championship sailed in perfect weather. The fleet ran two triangle, windward, leeward courses with bullets going to MENDELBLATT and STRUBE and Rick MERRIMAN and Steve MITCHELL (USA) giving the top five of the leaderboard an all-American look.

In the first race of the day MENDELBLATT and STRUBE held off CAYARD and SHARP to take victory. Last year's runners up Mark REYNOLDS and Anders EKSTROM (USA) claimed third with Canadian Olympic silver medallists Ross MacDONALD and Mike WOLFS finishing fourth for the third consecutive time.

In race four MacDONALD and WOLFS lost that consistent streak and dropped to 13, a finish that saw the ISAF World Sailing Rankings' number eight fall out of the top five. Whitbred Round the World Race winner and 1988 Star World Champion, CAYARD did manage to maintain his run of second places, and with overnight leaders John DANE and Austin SPERRY (USA) dropping to sixth in race three, CAYARD and SHARP secured the top spot on the leaderboard. Moving into fourth place overall thanks to victory in race four was MERRIMAN and MITCHELL. DANE and SPERRY sit second overall after recovering to third in the final race.

On Wednesday, bullets went to Andy HORTON and Brad NICOL (USA) in race one with DANE and SPERRY taking line honours in race two. In both races CAYARD and SHARP were second across the line giving top rung of the leaderboard a very consistent look.

Racing continues at the Nassau Yacht Club today with the conclusion of the Championship tomorrow. A win here in the Bahamas in this ISAF Grade C1 Event good well be enough to launch ISAF World Sailing Rankings' number 15, CAYARD, back into the top ten for the first time since December last year.
