Grey Goose ISAF Team Racing World Championship 2005
Newport, Rhode Island, USA

17 teams from eleven nations are set to go head to head in a battle of wits, tactical know-how and sailing skill as the fight for the Grey Goose ISAF Team Racing World Championship gets underway in Newport, Rhode Island, USA today.
Two years ago the USA took the title in Auckland, New Zealand and three of the members of team will be on their home waters in Newport looking to secure a third American victory at the ISAF Team Racing Worlds. However, with several former Worlds' winners amongst the challengers, the competition in Newport looks set to be tight.

USA 1

Mark IVEY and Matt LINBLAD

Also known as Team Whishbone, FALLON, RENZULLI, and LARGAY were part of the team that won the 2003 ISAF Team Racing Worlds in Auckland. Along with WADLOW, this quartet finished second in the 2001 Championship in Lake Brno, the Czech Republic. WADLOW is former college sailor of the year and competed in Athens in the Olympic Sailing Competition where he finished fifth with crew Pete SPAULDING in the 49er. IVEY is a four-time collegiate All-American.

USA 2

Patrick HOGAN and Carlos LENZ

Colin MERRICK and Amanda CALLAHAN

Also known as Silver Panda. Everyone except CALLAHAN competed in the 2003 Worlds, finishing sixth and won the 2002 Hinman Trophy for the US National Team Racing Championship. This team, complete with CALLAHAN finished second this year in the British Team Racing Championship, the Wilson Trophy. HOGAN, LEVESQUE, MERRICK, and CALLAHAN are all former collegiate All-American selections.

Australia 1

Rod CHAMBERLAIN and Caroline ROSS
Tim CUBIT and Emma FLUKES
Stewart WELLS and Michael SORRELL-SAUNDERS

Four members of this reigning Australian Open Team Race Championship squad (CHAMBERLAIN, CUBIT, WELLS, and ROSS) competed in the 2003 Worlds in New Zealand, where they finished eighth. Both CUBIT and CHAMBERLAIN finished in the top ten at the 2005 Australian Open Laser Championship. FLUKES competed at this year's Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship with her sister Stephanie in the 420.

Nick JONES and Claire CUNNINGHAM

Captain Claire CUNNINGHAM leads this team to the Worlds after a second place finish at the 2005 Australian Team Racing Championship. All six have top ten finishes in national team racing competitions. JONES, SPAULDING, and KEYES teamed to win the 2005 Australian Schools Team Racing title. JONES sailed in the 2003 Worlds.

Canada

Tine MOBERG-PARKER and Julie HUGHES
Anne Marie SHEWFELT and Hans FISHER
Kelly BECHARD and David SPRAGUE

Canada's best finish in the Team Racing Worlds was fifth in 1995. SPRAGUE, HUGES and SHEWFELT all hail from Toronto. MOBERG-PARKER, of Vancouver, is a former World Champion and competed in the Europe class for Canada during the 1996 Olympics.

Czech Republic

The Czech Republic hosted the 2001 World Championships, finishing ninth and eleventh. KITTLER was on the eleventh place squad. Martina KOUTNA and PREIBISCHOVA are the Czech 420 champions and have performed well on the World stage. FIALA is a Cadet European Champion.

Rob SHERINGTON and Melanie SHERINGTON

TYLECOTE is an ISAF Team Racing Worlds legend, having won the first Championship in 1995, finishing second in 2003, and taken third in 2001. SHERINGTON sailed with TYLECOTE in the 2003 Worlds and against him in the 2001 Worlds, finishing fifth. TYLECOTE, ELLIS, Rob and Melanie SHERINGTON are the defending Wilson Trophy Champions - TYLECOTE's sixth Wilson Trophy victory.

Great Britain 2

Stuart HUDSON and Hamish WALKER
Dom JOHNSON and Jen HEELEY
Owen MODRAL and Linda EADLE

Also known as the New Forest Pirates. HUDSON, JOHNSON, MODRAL, and EADIE finished fifth at the 2003 Worlds. HUDSON has four Wilson Trophy wins on his resume. He also won the Hinman Championship in 2001 along with JOHNSON and TYLECOTE of GBR 1.

India

Mahesh RAMACHARAN and G.L. YADAV
Nitin MOGIA and Asha DAHIYA
S.S. CHAUAN and R.S. DHULAJI

India is set to host the 2007 World Championship, and sent two teams to the 2003 Worlds in Auckland, finishing 13th and 16th overall. DHULAJI, RAMACHARAN, and MOGIA placed 13th in that event, and will be looking to improve in Newport with the eventual aim of success on their home waters.

Ireland 1

SHEEHY and GANNON are seven time National Team Racing Champions. SHEEHY, MACMANUS, GANNON, and FOLWER just missed the medals in the 2003 Worlds, finishing fourth, whilst both LOVEGROVE and TREACY also have previous Worlds experience.

Ireland 2

Ireland 2 represents the Royal St. George Yacht Club. O'SHEA was a member of the Irish squad that finished fourth at the 2003 Worlds. MAYHEW is a three time Wilson Trophy winner.

Italy

This will be Italy's first appearance at the ISAF Team Racing Worlds. CONTI sailed for Italy in the 2004 Olympics, finishing 14th in the Yngling with crew Alessandra MARENZI and Angela BARONI. ZENI is Italy's 2005 Under-20 Match Race Champion. The DUBBINI's are former top Optimist sailors.

US Virgin Islands

Taylor CANFIELD and Nathan ROSENBERG
Cy THOMPSON and Addison CAPRONI
Thomas BARROWS and Sarah SWANN

CANFIELD, ROSENBERG, THOMPSON, and BARROWS finished second at the 2005 U.S. High School Team Racing Championships. THOMPSON represented the U.S. Virgin Islands at the 2005 ISAF Youth Worlds in the Laser finishing in sixth place.

New Zealand 1

Greg WEBSTER and Charlie WEBSTER

Logan SUTHERLAND and Georgina HILL

New Zealand has a strong record at the ISAF Team Racing Worlds, with a wins in 1999 and 2001, and third and ninth place finishes in 2003. JURY has competed in many top match racing events this summer including a fourth place at the ISAF Grade 1 Sopot Match Race in Poland. HILL has raced at both the Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship and the 420 Worlds this year. SUTHERLAND was third in the 2005 Royal Navy Yacht Squadron Youth International Yacht Racing Championship.

New Zealand 2

Olivia POWRIE and Joe FOSTER

CORBETT, FARRAND, HOOPER, and FOSTER finished first in the 2005 New Zealand High School Team Racing Championship and second in the Open Team Racing Nationals. POWRIE represented New Zealand in the Laser Radial at the 2005 ISAF Youth Worlds in Korea and the 2004 Worlds in Poland.

Masakuni MIYAZIKI and Ayako YAMAGUCHI

NAKANO, NAGAMI, NOHARA, MIYAZIKI, and YAMAGUCHI have nine All-Japan Team Racing Championships among them. YAMAGUCHI, MIYAZIKI, EIRAKU, and NOHARA competed in the 2003 Worlds and finished 14th. EIRAKU finished eighth in the 2003 Laser Radial Worlds.

Kenichi NANBARA and Kazushi SEKIMORI
Kazuyoshi MOMIYAMA and Yashuhiko TSUGE
Takashi HIRAI and Keiko SEKIMORI

Also known as Aishisu Team. MOMIYAMA won the 2003 Japanese Collegiate Boardsailing Championship and was ninth in the All-Japan Flying Junior Championship.

Racing in the All Team League begins today before the teams move on to the Gold or Silver Leagues and then eventually the knock out stages. The full race schedule can be found HERE.
