With three steady performances Peter Burling and Blair Tuke (NZL) closed the gap on the Australians to nine points having started the day 17 points behind and third overall. Burling said, "We need to stay close to the Australians and we did that. We just need to keep doing what we're doing and not get too excited."

On the way the Kiwis closed the gap Outteridge said, "We would love to put a few more races on them before the Medal Race. It seems like a bit of a two-horse race, but when you're out there it definitely doesn't feel like that. The Kiwis had a better day. We made a few errors but we didn't get punished too badly."

Finland's Lauri Lehtinen and Kalle Bask won the day's opening race and followed it up with an 11th and third to climb into the final podium spot with four fleet races remaining.

Sweden's Jonas von Geijer and Niclas Düring were fifth coming into the day but a disastrous day for them that saw them go 16-8-19 meant they fell down to ninth overall. Stevie Morrison and Ben Rhodes (GBR) were second but an equally unimpressive day meant they fell to fourth overall.

The 49ers enjoy a deserved day of rest tomorrow after five days of sailing. They resume on Sunday 5 August at 12:00 local time on the Weymouth Bay West course.
