After four days of exciting races at Lake Norman Yacht Club in Mooresville, NC, US SAILING has crowned the 2003 U.S. Men's and Women's Champions. The Men's Championship was sailed in Highlanders and the Women's Championship was sailed in Flying Scots.
Zak FANBERG, Eugene SHMITT and Kippy CHAMBERLAIN representing Bay-Waveland Yacht Club of Mississippi won US SAILING's Mallory Cup for winning the U.S. Men's Championship. The women's team of Joni PALMER, Meredith DODD, and Carrie CARPENTER representing Deep Creek Yacht Club in Maryland received US SAILING's Adams Trophy and the prestigious title of U.S. Women's Champions.

Fanberg, Shmitt, and Chamberlain won the event 22 points ahead of the second place team of Tabaoda, Schon, and Chaloner representing Metedeconk River Yacht Club of New Jersey. The winning team also received the Staton J. PEELE Jr. Sportsmanship Trophy, as did Tom LAWTON, Mark ASPLAND, and Sean MURPHY of Lake Norman Yacht Club, NC. The Royal Victoria Yacht Club Trophy for demonstrating superior seamanship while underway and at mooring was awarded to Mark ITNYRE, Dave BOLYARD, and Ian TROTTER of Seal Beach and Southwestern Yacht Clubs in California.

The team of Palmer, Dodd, and Carpenter took the lead after the fifth race and by the end of the second day of racing, they were leading by one point. "I was pretty happy when we took the lead," said Palmer. "I knew we had a lot more races to go so we could extend our lead. Going into the last race, all we had to do was finish in ninth place or better to win the regatta." After the final day of racing, Palmer and her crew won by a total of two points, defeating the second-place team of Cummings, Lampe, and Szabo who represented Mission Bay Yacht Club from California.

The Alexander P. Gest Trophy for Third Place was awarded to Amy KLEINSHRODT, Sara HALL, and Jackie CULBERSON of Buccaneer Yacht Club, Alabama. The team of Molly O'BRYAN, Annelise MOORE, and Genie SIMEONA of Kaneohe Yacht Club in Hawaii won the Frances McElwain Wakeman Sportsmanship Award. And the "Shipshape" Award was presented to Natalie COLEMAN-FULLER, Alison COLEMAN, and Emily TAYLOR of Chatham Yacht Club, Massachusetts.
