HSBC Tornado World Championship 2006
San Isidro, Buenos Aires, Argentina

Two races were completed yesterday at the ISAF Grade W HSBC Tornado World Championship 2006 in San Isidro, Argentina. Xavier REVIL and Christophe ESPAGNON (FRA) lead the standings after a consistent performance.

The first day of racing started with light and shifty wind conditions. The Race Committee postponed the start of Race 1 on the water until the conditions improved.

Seven of the 48 Tornados that started the light SE 6-8 knots wind race were OCSs including 2004 Olympic silver medallists (USA) John LOVELL & Charlie OGLETREE (USA) and Aaron McINTOSH & Bruce KENDALL (NZL).

Double Olympic gold medallists Roman HAGARA and Hans Peter STEINACHER lead from the start followed by ISAF World Ranked number one team Xavier REVIL and Christophe ESPAGNON (FRA).

The Austrian team opened a comfortable distance to cross the line in first followed by REVIL and ESPAGNON.

The clean right side of the gate in the second upwind paid off for Enrique FIGUEROA and Jorge HERNANDEZ (PUR) and Mitch BOOTH and Pim NIEUWENHIS (NED) who finished third and fourth consecutively.

The south easterly breeze picked up and the Tornados started Race 2 with a 10-12 knots breeze and gusts reaching 14 knots. After a clean start the fleet divided itself to both sides of the course.

Once again, the leader, Darren BUNDOCK and Glenn ASHBY (AUS), opened a good distance. Behind them the Greek team of Iordanis PASCHALADIS and Constantinos TRIGONIS and Johannes POLGAR and Florian SPALTEHOLZ (GER) were closely fighting for the second position.

On the second downwind the jib of BUNDOCK and ASHBY down and the lead they had wasn't enough to keep them ahead of second placed Johannes POLGAR and Florian SPALTEHOLZ (GER). The Germans took the bullet, followed by BUNDOCK and ASHBY.

PASCHALADIS and TRIGONIS crossed the line in third, followed by Javier PADRON and Antonio CUEVAS MONS in fourth and Xavier REVIL and Christophe ESPAGNON (FRA) in fifth.

Winners of Race 1, Roman HAGARA and Hans Peter STEINACHER, crossed the line in eighth.
