Clipper Round the World Race 2003
Hawaii

Jersey beaten into Hawaii on Clipper round the world race
Having overtaken Glasgow Clipper two days ago, Hong Kong skipper Justin Taylor and his crew managed to maintain their lead to finish at 20:58 GMT yesterday with Rupert Parkhouse bringing the Glasgow crew in a mere 47 minutes later at 21:45.

Both crews were greeted at the dock and were soon enjoying a well-deserved cold beer.

Despite Hong Kong's bold move north to cross the ITCZ before the rest of the fleet, both skipper's tactics were such that over half the race was sailed within a few miles of each other, turning a crossing of the world's largest ocean in to a virtual match race.

At the time of writing Cape Town Clipper, skippered by Roger Steven-Jennings, had just crossed the finish line of the 4,200 mile Ko Olina Cup Race (13:46 GMT) to take seventh place. Race Director, Colin de Mowbray, and the ever helpful staff of the Ko Olina Marina eagerly await their arrival dockside, where it is approaching 4 o'clock in the morning!

Meanwhile Sam Fuller and the New York crew are making steady, if slow, progress towards the finish. Sam reported that the wind was frustratingly light and said that although they had just over 150 miles to go, they could well be the longest miles of the race.

They are expecting to reach the finish line in the early hours of tomorrow morning, which is Saturday evening in Hawaii so they can be assured of a raucous welcome from their rival crews!
