EUROSAF Match Racing, European Open Championship, 2013

Sails of the White Nights – National Congress Palace Cup

Andrew Arbuzov is crowned EUROSAF Open Match Racing Champion 2013 and winner of the Sails of the White Nights – National Congress Palace Cup

Despite the best efforts of the wind, the Race Committee met the challenge of completing the Championship in St Petersburg on Sunday, to find the European Open Match Race Champion of 2013. In excess of 60 races were completed over the four days of the championship and the outcome was a win for Andrew Arbuzov from Russia.

To complete the event at all was a fantastic achievement on the part of the Race Committee, because, with very few exceptions, wind speeds seldom exceeded 10 knots and with the current of the River Neva, the boats made slow progress. There were times in the day when the wind almost disappeared altogether, resulting in much waiting around for sailors and officials alike. Having taken three days to complete the first round-robin stage, the race committee decided they had no option but to abandon the quarter final stage and jump straight to the semi-finals start on Sunday morning. Arbuzov, who had topped the leader board after the round-robin stage, was paired against his fellow countryman Sergey Musikhin, while in the second semi-final Simone Ferrarese from Italy was drawn against Eric Monnin from Switzerland. The wind, however, took control, and after completing just four races, with each crew winning one race, the Race Committee took the decision to cancel the semi-final and go straight to the final.

In what was designated to be the best of three races, Arbuzov and his crew, Viacheslav Kaptyukhin and Nikolay Kornev, sailed against Ferrarese and his crew of Alex Muscat and Ivan Peute in the final, while Musikhin raced against Monnin in the petit-final. The wind held just sufficiently to complete the championship, with Arbuzov winning the final two nil and Musikhin winning by a similar margin over Monnin in the Petit Final to take third place.

With the stunning backdrop of the City of St Petersburg, and the large crowds on the shore enjoying the festival of the Sails if the White Nights, the event attracted a lot of attention. “It was unfortunate that the winds did not treat us kindly,” said Oleg Ilyin, Vice-President of EUROSAF, “but where else in the world could a sailing championship take place surrounded by so much history?” John Friend, also from EUROSAF, commented “Racing at a venue like this is a unique opportunity for sailing to promote itself to the world, and I think the organisers here in St Petersburg have gone out of their way to put on an excellent show for the sport of sailing and for EUROSAF.”
