Teams from Brazil and Argentina were completely tied after the first round of the ISAF Nations Cup 2013 - Regional Final South America which is being held in Mar del Plata with the organization of the Club Náutico Mar del Plata.
A duel between competitors that know each other very well is being held in Mar del Plata, as both male crews Haddad (BRA) and Grimaldi (ARG), as female Senft (BRA) and Silva (ARG) have shared many match race finals in recent years. After the first day both categories were tied at 2-2, in the best of seven races series.
In the Open Category Grimaldi started better than Haddad in the first race, winning the start and dominating from the beginning to the end. In the second race Grimaldi seemed to have a better start again, but the first shift went the way of the Brazilians who took the race win. In the third race Haddad took a big lead but Grimaldi made a great comeback in the last run, but it was not enough to take the win. In the last race of the day Haddad won the start but Grimaldi kept him close to his stern and attacked in the run to overpass him in a risky manoeuvre and then stretched the lead to make it 2-2.
In the women's category the Brazilians took the first race after winning the start. It seemed that the Silva sisters were suffering the consequences with from one crewmember out with a fever, but in the second race they got a good start and dominated. Senfft controlled the start of the third race to go ahead 2-1 but in the last race Martina, Lucia and Trinidad Silva showed more speed and controlled the Brazilian team to even the series.
The winners will proceed to the ISAF Nations Cup Grand Final set to be held in Middelfart, Denmark in August.
