Inside Cinemax's Bloody Hit Banshee

21 minutes ago | TVGuide - Breaking News | See recent TVGuide - Breaking News news »

On a hot fall afternoon just outside Charlotte, North Carolina, Antony Starr is busy getting punched in the kidneys, slammed against a wall and kicked in the solar plexus. As he pauses for a breath, a command comes: "Let's work on that strangling again!" Just a typical day on the set of Banshee.

Flash back to late April. On the first day of shooting, the actor playing Starr's opponent in a brawl came at him a bit too strong. "He cracked me in the face and split my lip open," Starr recalls, "but our schedule was so tight, I didn't get to the hospital for six hours." That's when Starr realized just how different filming Cinemax's noirish thriller would be from the comedies and dramas he was used to making in his native New Zealand. "They shot...

Curveball Over La Dodgers TV Deal For Guggenheim And Major League Baseball

36 minutes ago | Deadline TV | See recent Deadline TV news »

Few consumers are anticipating the new Los Angeles Dodgers/Time Warner Cable TV deal because they’re going to get screwed out of more hard-earned money per month. They can thank Guggenheim Partners which bought the Dodgers with an ownership group including Magic Johnson and Peter Guber for $2.15 billion last year. Guggenheim plans to carry the games on a new regional sports network it’ll own called SportsNetLA. It’s got Time Warner Cable doing the heavy lifting as its charter distributor, exclusive advertising and affiliate sales agent, and channel operations manager. But now there’s a problem: the deal has yet to be submitted to Major League Baseball for approval after 5 weeks. The reason is that Mlb wants to know exactly what its cut of the $7 billion, 25-year television deal will be. And Guggenheim looks like it’s trying to pitch curveballs to the league. Trust me, if you think Hollywood studios are greedy, »

Pandora Media Chief To Leave Just In Time

3 hours ago | Deadline TV | See recent Deadline TV news »

Joseph J. Kennedy said he would be leaving Pandora Media after a 9-year tenure. His announcement was made to his Board on Tuesday and in an analyists call on Thursday.  Now the Internet radio service will search for a successor.  The chairman/CEO may be getting out just in time. In September 2012 the stock was pummelled by reports that Apple may launch a rival ad-supported music service. Pandora investors fear that the streaming music service — which tailors selections to users’ tastes — could be crushed by the electronics giant. Pandora has about 150 million registered users, and 55 million of them listen frequently giving it a significant head start over Apple. But payments for music rights eat up about 60% of its revenues which has severely impacted Pandora’s profitability. Since that report, Pandora’s stock has righted itself and the company has posted better-than-expected earnings and growth for its fiscal 4th quarter and full year. »

Global Showbiz Briefs: Silvio Berlusconi, Nicholas Hytner, India Channel Crunch, ‘Vigilante’ Launched

4 hours ago | Deadline TV | See recent Deadline TV news »

Silvio Berlusconi To Appeal Wiretap Verdict Italian media mogul and former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi was handed a one-year jail term today by an Italian court over an illegal wiretap. It’s highly unlikely the Mediaset chief will do any time as he has appeals available to him and, under Italian law, isn’t expected to go to prison until all appeal attempts are exhausted. Berlusconi is already appealing a four-year sentence that was handed to him in Milan last year over fraud on movie rights deals. Today’s punishment comes for making public the taped contents of a confidential phone call in a case related to a 2005 banking scandal, Reuters reported. Berlusconi has oft been in court before over his business dealings, but he’s always been cleared or seen the statute of limitations expire. 'Walking Dead' Season 4: New showrunner Scott Gimple praised as a 'tremendous voice' and 'great artist' by cast and crew

5 hours ago | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

There are still three episodes left in "The Walking Dead" Season 3, but it's never too soon to start thinking about Season 4 and the transition to new showrunner Scott Gimple.

Glen Mazzara has been manning the ship ever since Frank Darabont departed midway through Season 2, and fans have clearly sparked to Mazzara's dramatic, action-packed and conflict-driven vision for the show. Unfortunately, we're losing Mazzara as well next season. That's when Gimple will take over as showrunner.

While we have no idea yet what Season 4 will look like -- the writers have just begun the process of breaking stories -- there's reason to believe Gimple is a solid choice to continue the strong work Mazzara has been doing on the show. For one, the episodes he's written since joining the series in Season 2 -- "Pretty Much Dead Already," "Hounded" and last week's spectacular "Clear" among them -- have been first-rate installments.

‘Parenthood’ At PaleyFest: Season 5?

Diane Haithman contributes to Deadline’s TV coverage. At this evening’s PaleyFest panel on NBC’s Parenthood, the question on everyone’s mind was whether Parenthood will be around to make audiences bawl for a 5th season? Oddly, this question got punted to 15-year-old Max Burkholder, who gamely tried to answer. “I don’t think there’s any way to know, or anything to officially announce, but I’m definitely crossing my fingers.” According to the moderator, TVline’s Michael Ausiello, some fingers are crossed already for Monica Potter to win an Emmy nod. Her character fought cancer this season. He offered that Potter portrayed “the C word, but now there’s talk that she might be a contender for the E word.” Pplot twists have included abortion, illness, autism and heartbreak, but an audience member stood up to show her bald head. Parenthood showrunner Jason Katims, along with 12 of the beloved NBC family drama’s cast members, graced the stage at PaleyFest 2013 Thursday night to discuss high hopes for a fifth season, who’ll be back if the series is fortunate enough to return, Sarah’s controversial romantic twist and much more.

Wasting no time getting to the juiciest question of all, TVLine’s own Michael Ausiello — who moderated the event — grilled Katims on the likelihood of a renewal. The Ep, of course, didn’t have a definitive answer, but instead turned it over to Max Burkholder, who enthused: “You can never be sure, »

'Glee' celebrates 500 songs with movie magic

8 hours ago | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

The "Glee" gang celebrated its 500th song on Thursday night's (March 7) episode, which featured Mr. Schuester assigning songs of the movies to the kids.

It stemmed from a post-being-left-at-the-altar dream that Will had, wherein he sang "You're All The World to Me" with his former bride-to-be Emma. In case you're curious, that song is from the movie "Royal Wedding" starring Fred Astaire, which featured the (at the time) revolutionary filmmaking technique of having Astaire dance on the walls and ceiling of the room he was in by having a custom-built set that rolled on an axis along with an attached camera and camera operator.

We hope "Glee" did it the same way.

The show also featured "Shout" from "Animal House," "Come What May" from "Moulin Rouge," a mash-up of "Danger Zone" from "Top Gun" and "Old Time Rock 'n Roll" from "Risky Business," which was surprisingly a lot of fun, »
