Watch: Danny Boye's 'Trance' Steals From An Auction In New 2 Minute Clip

Danny Boyle has always been a frenetic and energetic filmmaker, blending music and images like few others, but it looks he may go to trippy new heights with the mind-bending heist thriller “Trance.” With the Oscar-winning director heading to SXSW this weekend, a new clip from the film has dropped online. Pulled from the beginning of the movie, the clip showcases the heist that sets off the events of the film in which James McAvoy’s fine art auctioneer conspires with a gang of thieves led by Vincent Cassel to steal a high priced painting and wakes up not remembering where he hid the stolen artwork. The other thieves begin to turn the screws, and McAvoy sees Rosario Dawson, a therapist who specializes in hypnosis, to try and help him remember where it is. “Trance” hits theatres next month on April 5th and Boyle is stopping by the Vimeo Theatre »

Watch: U.S. Trailer & New Clip From Terrence Malick's 'To The Wonder'

For a filmmaker who’s famous for having a twenty-year gap between films, Terrence Malick has been surprisingly prolific as of late. His last film was 2011’s “The Tree Of Life” and here we are, just under two years later with another film from the reclusive director just around the corner, with more to come. It’s a little over a month until the divisive “To The Wonder” hits theatres in the U.S. (it’s already playing in the U.K.) and a new trailer has arrived online. While there isn’t too much new footage in the trailer, it’s still a pleasure to see more of Emmanuel Lubezki’s cinematography before the film is released. In fact, the Dp could be said to be as much of star in the film as Ben Affleck, Olga Kurylenko, Rachel McAdams and Javier Bardem. Though Malick’s sixth film received »

Watch: Teaser For Mystery Project Directed By James Gray Featuring Ewan McGregor & Vinessa Shaw

Well, here's a little bit of a mystery to cap off your week. Just like that, a teaser has dropped online without any context at all, but promises some kind of project involving director James Gray and stars Ewan McGregor and Vinessa Shaw. Hmmm.... There's not many clues to go by in the brief, one minute trailer but what we're told is that McGregor is playing a character named Mats Anderson, while Shaw takes the role of Special Agent Carter. Hmm. Adding a bit of intrigue, is that the fact that the name of the person who uploaded the video is also Mats Andersen (and it's currently the only thing on their Vimeo channel). Aside from that, the footage itself makes it clear that all three are working together on something, but what that exactly is remains unclear. If we were to take a wild swing in the dark, we'd »

Watch: Teaser Trailer For Sofia Coppola's 'The Bling Ring' Starring Emma Watson Goes Shopping

It looks like young people doing very bad things is going to be recurring theme this year. And the folks at A24 are more than happy to bring it you. Later this month, Harmony Korine and his group of young starlets tear up Florida in "Spring Breakers." Then this summer, Emma Watson joins another group of no good kids to steal and rob in "The Bling Ring" but there's one difference -- this is based on actual events. The first teaser for Sofia Coppola's film is here, and it's a stylistic left turn for the filmmaker. Known for her moodier efforts like "The Virgin Suicides," "Lost In Translation" and "Somewhere," this is pumped up by pushed-to-the-red sounds of "Crown On The Ground" by Sleigh Bells, and with a much more energetic, ripped-from-the-headlines vibe and in-the-moment feel (thanks to the surveillance style footage). Israel Broussard, Katie Chang, Claire Pfister, Georgia Rock »

Obviously: 'Oz The Great And Powerful' Sequel In The Works

By now, it shouldn't really be a surprise. When you're spending $325 million on a movie, you're hoping for a franchise, especially if you're Disney. Remember before "John Carter" came out how there was already tentative plans for a followup, "John Carter: The Gods Of Mars"? Perhaps learning not to count their chickens before they hatch, Disney has until now remained mum on any further travels down the yellow brick road after this weekend's "Oz The Great And Powerful" (our review). But with a massive opening weekend in the forecast, a small bit of their plans have been revealed. Variety reports that Mitchell Kapner -- who co-wrote 'Powerful' with David Lindsay-Abaire -- has been tapped to write the sequel. But the more interesting morsel is that Kapner was hired "several months ago to work" on the followup, and you can probably bet that if the movie were projecting to tank, we »

Jeffrey Wright Joins 'Boardwalk Empire,' RZA Gets 'Gang Related' & Scoot McNairy Is Ready To 'Halt & Catch Fire'

Exciting news for “Boardwalk Empire” fans – Jeffrey Wright will join the show for its fourth season next year as a series regular. He'll be playing “Valentin Narcisse, Doctor of Divinity, philanthropist, student of culture and the man who runs Harlem.” So he’s a character with a pretty impressive CV, and it's some nice casting for a show that continues to cast respected character actors. Wright recently finished work on “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” where he played the notable character from the books, Beetee. After making his directorial debut last year with the Eli Roth-produced “The Man With the Iron Fists,” it looks like Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA is ready to do some work on the small screen. His most notable television gig to date was a recurring role on “Californication,” but he’ll now join Ramon Rodriguez, Jay Hernandez and Sung Kang in Fox’s drama pilot, »

Review: 'The We & The I' Is A Testing, Patronizing Let-Down From Michel Gondry

Like some Gallic version of Tim Burton, Michel Gondry's initial promise has given way to a series of films whose diminishing returns demonstrate that he's a talented visualist without the capacity for, or worse, any interest in, telling an actual story. Gondry's defenders will, of course, point to the excellent "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," but the passage of years has made it abundantly clear that the credit for that film belongs entirely to screenwriter Charlie Kaufman; Gondry may have gotten out of the way of that script, but that's hardly a reason to celebrate his skills or capabilities, such as they are, beyond that. The messy "Be Kind, Rewind," the cutesy-creepy "The Science of Sleep," the noisome and needless "Green Hornet"...Gondry's name above a title has gone from being a reason to seek a film to being a reason to shun it. "The We and the I, »

Interview: Robin Wright On The Texas Hall Of Fame Awards, 'House of Cards,' The 'Dragon Tattoo' Sequel & Her Amazing Hair

There are a lot of twists on the new David Fincher-produced Netflix series "House of Cards," which follows a devious, BBQ-loving congressman (Kevin Spacey) who looks to exact revenge upon the President of the United States after being instrumental in his election (and then passed over for a high profile cabinet position). But no one could have possibly imagined how wonderful Robin Wright, who plays Spacey's wife (in a role that oscillates between Martha Stewart, Hillary Clinton and Lady Macbeth), really is. She's sleek and sexy and absolutely lethal, but sympathetic and occasionally loving too. And the accomplishment hasn't gone unnoticed. The night before the South by Southwest Film Festival kicks off, Wright will be honored at the Texas Hall Of Fame Awards, which is put on by the Austin Film Society (Wright was born in Dallas). We got to talk to Wright about "House of Cards," the Texas Hall of Fame Awards, »

Watch: The New Trailer For M. Night Shyamalan's 'After Earth' Starring Will & Jaden Smith Crash Lands

So this summer, you'll have no shortage of Earth-as-a-barren-wasteland-and-metaphor-for-our-excess movies. Tom Cruise rides motorbikes alone next month in "Oblivion," and not too long after, M. Night Shyamalan delivers "After Earth," which presents the planet as having evolved to kill humans.  It turns our there is something scarier than the wind in "The Happening".... Okay, okay, snark aside, this actually doesn't look too awful -- or at least not "The Last Airbender" awful. On the plus side, this looks appropriately epic and huge, and most importantly, it stands on its own from its closest comparison point, "Oblivion." And the action stuff doesn't look as corny as we though it would. On the downside? What the fuck are those accents? And we're not really keen on watching a whole movie of Furrowed Brow Will Smith trying to reconcile his relationship with his son. For a movie set far in the future, that's a pretty tired concept. »

Andrea Riseborough Joins The Increasingly Great Cast Of Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's Comedy 'Birdman'

Well, hell... As if lining up Michael KeatonEmma StoneNaomi WattsZach Galifianakis and Edward Norton wasn't enough, the cast for Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's comedy "Birdman" just keeps getting better and better. The latest addition is two-time BAFTA nominee Andrea Riseborough. While not as A-list as the rest of the cast, she's got an impressive resume behind her, thanks to "Never Let Me Go," "Brighton Rock," "W.E.," "Made In Dagenham" and "Shadow Dancer" and next month, she makes her blockbuster debut opposite His Cruiseness in "Oblivion." So yeah, Riseborough is a name that's about to become a lot more familiar.  Based on a Raymond Chandler short story, "Birdman" centers on a former actor, played by Keaton, who once played an iconic superhero and mounts a Broadway play in a bid to reclaim his past glories. But his efforts to return to the spotlight are threatened by the egotistical leading actor of the play, »

Elisabeth Moss, Mark Duplass & Ted Danson Are 'The One I Love'

An unexpected mix of thespians -- Elisabeth MossMark Duplass, and Ted Danson have signed on to star in a new indie entitled “The One I Love,” from first-time feature director Charlie McDowell and first-time feature scribe Justin Lader. Moss and Duplass will play a married couple with relationship issues, while Danson will play their therapist. Duplass will also be executive producing, once again flexing his multi-hyphenate muscles.  Perhaps the most intriguing aspect of the news so far is McDowell’s claim to fame. While he has directed a short, “Bye Bye Benjamin,” scripted by Lader and also starring Danson, he is most notorious for his popular Twitter feed @charliemcdowell (93,000+ followers), on which he adopts the voice of a man listening to his female neighbors who can be heard from the apartment above. Effectively, he makes indignant fun of how stupid every word out of their mouths is. But »

'House Of Cards' Star Corey Stoll & Jane Fonda Join Shawn Levy's 'This Is Where I Leave You'

If you’ve been Kate Mara-thoning “House of Cards” over this past month or so like Netflix want you to, then you’ll likely have been pretty impressed by the work of Corey Stoll who plays Congressman Peter Russo in the political thriller. Stoll’s biggest roles on the big screen have come in the likes of “Salt,” “Midnight in Paris” (in which he played Ernest Hemingway) and “The Bourne Legacy,” but now he’s landed what sounds like a pretty sizable role in Shawn Levy’s new comedy. “This Is Where I Leave You” will have us watching based on its leads alone, but now Stoll will join Tina Fey and Jason Bateman in the adaptation of a Jonathan Tropper novel. The film will follow a dysfunctional family in which the father’s death forces the four grown siblings to spend a week together in the house where »

Review: 'Dead Man Down' Is A Surprisingly Satisfying Revenge Movie That Combines B-Movie Aesthetics With European Artiness

"Dead Man Down," the new revenge movie that marks the domestic debut of Niels Arden Oplev, the Danish director behind the original Swedish version of "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," doesn't have an extended title sequence. There are a couple of names of production companies and then the title and that's it. This is sort of strange, especially considering its impressive cast, which includes Colin Farrell, Noomi Rapace, Isabelle Huppert and Terrence Howard. But everything about "Dead Man Down" is designed to catch you off guard, and most of the time it totally works, effortlessly mixing B-movie aesthetics with deeply contemplative European artiness. The result is a movie that is genuinely, totally unexpected. The film's unpredictability is present from the get-go. This is a movie co-produced by the WWE corporation and "Fast and the Furious" shepherd Neal Moritz, but its first scene is a hipster criminal named Darcy (Dominic Cooper) giving a slow moving, »

20 Iconic & Memorable Movie Death Scenes

Tomorrow sees the release of "The ABCs Of Death," a new horror anthology from some of the top new names in the genre, with a fairly similar premise: 26 directors, 26 very short films, 26 very different ways to die. From the apocalypse to Zetsumetsu, there's all kinds of inventive ways to be offed across its two-hour running time, and it's sure to keep gorehounds entertained, as our review suggested, even if horror neophytes might be left scratching their heads. But for all the passings on screen in "The ABCs of Death," it doesn't seem likely that any will really enter cinema history. Death is just about the most dramatic thing that can happen, and as such, is at the heart of many great films and some of cinema's most iconic shots and moments involve one character or another popping off their mortal coil, either peacefully or not. So, to celebrate the release of "The ABCs of Death, »

Watch: Beautifully Bonkers Video For Beach House's "Wishes" Directed By Eric Wareheim

It may only be March, but we already have a candidate for music video of the year. And no, it doesn't come from more experienced and well-known folks in the field like Floria SigismondiJonas Åkerlund or other exotically named people. Instead it comes from Eric Wareheim of "Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!" fame. And it's as bonkers as you might expect... ...and surprisingly beautiful in its own way, too. The spot for Beach House's "Wishes" finds Wareheim re-enlisting his "Tim and Eric's Billion Dollar Movie" star Ray Wise as he leads the oddest football halftime event this side of Beyoncé, with fireworks, horses and more. It's definitely worth a look, and after that, if you have a half hour to spare, you can watch the band's short film "Forever Still." Check 'em both out below. [Pitchfork] »

Complete Tracklisting For M83's 'Oblivion' Soundtrack Revealed

Yesterday, movie and music fans got a nice surprise when M83's "StarWaves" from the upcoming soundtrack to the sci-fi film "Oblivion" landed online. Now, twenty-four hours later, the full tracklisting has been revealed, and make no mistake, Anthony Gonzalez has ditched the more flowerly song titles from his albums, for names that definitely reflect Joseph Kosinski's movie. Spoilers ahead? For his first major movie scoring job, M83 was assisted by "Tron: Uprising" and "The Raid" composer Joseph Trapanese. And it seems Gonzalez had to do some adjustments from his original vision, but ultimately, he's pleased with what he put together. “Scoring the film was a true enjoyment,” he said. “It involved lots of stress, lots of sweat, and lots of hard work, but in the end, the soundtrack serves the movie very well. It really is a great Hollywood soundtrack. Oblivion is a big film with a big sound and a big orchestra, »

Watch: 2 Clips & Lots Of Pics From Jean Dujardin Thriller 'Mobius,' Making International Premiere At Tribeca Film Festival

“Mobius” is a film that has been on our radar for a while now, first intriguing us last November with its "Inception"-esque teaser. Then it was announced yesterday that “Mobius” would be included in the lineup at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival and, right on cue, we have a whole slew of new pics as well as a couple of clips from the film to get us even more excited. Certainly, this makes “Mobius” a must-see at next month’s festival. The French thriller stars Jean Dujardin, Tim Roth, and Cecile de France and follows undercover Russian Fsb officer Gregory Lioubov (Dujardin) and international trader Alice Redmond (De France), who has her own secrets to hide. Their relationship sparks a deadly chase to snag Lioubov’s real target, business magnate Ivan Rostovsky (Roth). The trilingual film -- Russian, French and English -- tests the tongues of the cast, »

Exclusive: Images From SXSW Doc On Branson, Missouri 'We Always Lie To Strangers' Plus Trailer

For a certain generation, their only knowledge of Branson, Missouri may be from a quip by Bart Simpson who once said that Homer described it as "Las Vegas if it was run by Ned Flanders." Indeed, known for its own brand of colorful nightlife and entertainment, the city is far from a punchline, and has become one of the top tourist destinations in America. And starting this weekend at the SXSW Film Festival, you can take a closer look at Branson and what it means to live and perform there. Directed by Aj Schnack and David Wilson, and slotted in the Documentary Feature Competition at SXSW, "We Always Lie To Strangers" takes a look at the Ozark town, in which family still plays a very important factor both on stage and off. But with shifting social mores and the rippling effects of the economy being felt, changes are happening in Branson, »

Watch: Joss Whedon Goes Shakespeare With Trailer For 'Much Ado About Nothing'

Yes, Joss Whedon -- who made $1 billion and change for Marvel simply by making some spandex heroes fly around for a couple of hours -- has made a movie based on a Shakespeare play. In black and white. In his backyard. And on a budget that would barely feed the cast and crew of "The Avengers" for a single day. But you know what else? It actually looks pretty good. The first trailer for "Much Ado About Nothing" has arrived, and it's eager to shake off any associations with the Bard being boring, by fizzing things up with quick cutting and scoring the promo with St. Germain's jazzy "Rose Rouge." And it presents 'Much Ado' -- starring friends and frequent collaborators Amy Acker, Alexis Denisof, Nathan Fillion, Fran Kranz, Jillian Morgese, Sean Maher, Clark Gregg and Reed Diamond -- as a hip, contemporary relationship movie, albeit it one with soliloquies. »

20 Oddball Sci-Fi Films Of The 1970s

Somewhere between 1968's “2001: A Space Odyssey” and 1977's “Star Wars,” something happened in the culture. Storytellers, perhaps inspired by the fizzling out of the hippie counter-culture, the still-dragging-on war in Vietnam and post-Watergate disillusionment, began to look at the future in a somewhat darker, more idiosyncratic way than had been the case before, shifting focus to recurring themes of environmental disaster, utopias gone sour, and the end of all things. The result is one of the most distinctive and self-contained periods of sci-fi movies in the history of cinema, one where the films proved weirder, more distinctive and trippier than at almost any other time. One such example, Michael Crichton's curious western/sci-fi hybrid "Westworld," hits Blu-ray for the first time this week, and celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. And so we thought this felt like a good opportunity to run down 20 of our favorite -- or in some cases, »
