A true-crime story that begins with a notorious murder case and grows into a chilling indictment of the American justice system.

It tells the story of a terrible crime compounded by a grave injustice that's been remedied, but only in part, so it's impossible to have a single or simple response to the movie.

What sets this film apart from previous efforts to document the story is that Jackson and Walsh financed a private investigative team with legal and forensic experts who re-examined old evidence, conducted new interviews and found new witnesses.

Berg's film is as much an indictment of the state of Arkansas' legal system as it is the prosecution.

Isn't unnecessary, but it's often superfluous.

The film suggests these powerless, poorly educated young men were scapegoated because they would be missed by nobody of importance -- the justice system equivalent of the cannon fodder recruited from the same socioeconomic straits.

It's nice to have all the twists and turns of the iconic case contained tidily in one well-crafted film, although there are no real revelations here.

"West of Memphis" becomes a greatest-hits concert of prosecutorial misconduct, and you'll agree when the film asserts that prosecutors knew they had the wrong guys.

"West of Memphis" does nothing to displace its predecessor films as masterpieces of investigative filmmaking, but complements them as a riveting capstone to an epic and tragic tale.

West Of Memphis isn't afraid to show us the graphic nature of the crime and more importantly, it isn't afraid to point fingers at those whose actions deserve to be questioned.

It's reasonable to question whether the time and resources poured into this project might have been better spent highlighting a miscarriage of American justice that nobody knows about rather than one that enjoys a celebrity profile.

The most intriguing and worthy aspect of this accomplished documentary is that it never lets anyone forget the biggest tragedy of the many threaded through this story - the helpless children who never deserved the brutal fate handed to them.

Audience Reviews for West of Memphis

Filmmaker Amy Berg follows up her terrific documentary Deliver Us from Evil with West of Memphis, a fourth film that takes another look at the case of the West Memphis Three, the three Teens falsely accused of a heinous crime. With all new interviews, Berg directs a stunning documentary that recounts the misinformation of the trial that lead to the wrongful convictions of Damien Echols, Jessie Misskelley and Jason Baldwin. This is a truly remarkable film that sheds new light on the case, and reanalyzes key aspects of the trial. After the three Paradise Lost documentaries, and this film, you get a new outlook on the case itself. The new info eventually cleared the WM3 and this film was made a few years after they were cleared. What separates this new documentary is that it overlooked the entire case. This is a brilliant film that is shocking, riveting from start to finish and looks at the cracks of the American justice system and the dedication of a group of people to try and save the three who were wrongly convicted. If you want a stellar documentary, West of Memphis is the one to watch. Along with the Paradise Lost trilogy, these are among the best documentaries I've seen. The original facts of the trial are enraging and it is sickening that laws that are supposed to protect the innocent are used to wrongly convict them. Amy Berg direction is immaculate and she always manages to craft wonderful documentaries that are worth seeing. Definitely give this one a shot if you're interested in the subject along with the three classics Paradise Lost. This is brilliant filmmaking and is a highly engaging film that you can't turn away from.

"West of Memphis" is the fourth movie(albeit by a different filmmaker) about the West Memphis Three. In the early 90's three young men(basically teenagers) were convicted of brutally raping and murdering three children in Arkansas. But through some outside investigation, celebrity involvement, and new DNA evidence it's proven that the justice system failed and they were wrongly convicted. This is a documentary that covers it pretty much from beginning to end, and it's a very fascinating story. It shows how flawed of a system this country has, and it also shows that when people come together things can change and be set right. The director(Amy Berg) also made a documentary called "Deliver us from Evil" a few years ago that is one of the scariest movies a person can watch. She is a must watch director for me. The movie gets off to a slow start, and it runs at 2 and half hours, which is very long for a documentary. But it's fascinating material that needs to be seen. I haven't seen the other three movies(the "Paradise Lost" trilogy") which revolve around the same case, but this makes me want to go back and revisit them. Great film that everyone should watch.
