Hornsea wind farm public consultations

Be involved in the public consultation and events for the Hornsea offshore wind farm.

SMart Wind is now conducting formal public consultations until 13th March 2013 under the Planning Act 2008 on its first and second offshore wind farm projects - Project One and Project Two within the Hornsea Round Three offshore wind farm zone.

The zone is off the Yorkshire coast, adjacent to the River Humber and between 31km and 190km off Yorkshire coast.

SMart Wind is running a series of regional consultation events for both Project One and Project Two

Whilst the RYA is lobbying at a national level to ensure the safety of navigation through all wind farms, it is of equal importance that you are making your views heard at the local level as part of the developer’s statutory local community consultation process.

Project One

Project One will comprise up to three offshore wind generating stations with an aggregated maximum capacity of 1.2 Gigawatts (GW) or 1,200 Megawatts (MW).

There would be between 150 and 332 turbines (depending on turbine type) within Project One, with turbine capacities ranging from 3.6 MW up to 8 MW being considered.

Export cables

Current plans indicate that the offshore export cables will be brought ashore at Horseshoe Point, and from there they will connect to the existing National Grid substation at North Killingholme in North Lincolnshire district, a distance of approximately 40 km.

In order to connect the cables to the National Grid, a new onshore HVDC converter station or HVAC substation will be required in the vicinity of the existing North Killingholme substation.

“The export cable landfall could be a navigational issue for recreational boating. We will be monitoring how this progresses”. Stuart Carruthers, RYA Cruising Manager.

This is the fourth and final stage of the pre-application consultation for Project One. The public will have the opportunity to review and comment on the formal consultation information which includes the key documents, reports and plans that will accompany the application to the Planning Inspectorate later this year.

The formal consultation information for Project One Phase 4 can be downloaded from the SMart Wind website.

Project Two

Project Two, which comprises one or more offshore generating stations, will have a maximum capacity of 1.8GW or 1,800MW.

The proposed turbine capacities for Project Two range from 5MW to 15MW and so, based on a total capacity of 1.8GW, this project will have between 80 and 360 wind turbines with the nearest turbine 89 km from the East Riding of Yorkshire coast.

In addition to the turbines and their foundations, Project Two will include all associated infrastructure to connect the project to its onshore grid connection point at National Grid's existing North Killingholme Substation in North Lincolnshire.

The Project Two, Phase 1 formal pre-application consultation information can downloaded from the SMart Wind website.

SMartwind have synchronised the Project One and Project Two consultation phases with the aim of ensuring that the process of developing the projects simultaneously is clearly set out and understood.
