Waste Management

Waste Management at Marinas and clubs is regulated through a number of pieces of legislation. Every facility has a 'duty of care' for its waste management under the Environment Protection Act 1990. More recently any hazardous waste which includes paint tins, toner cartridges, fluorescent light tubes, batteries, etc., are regulated under the Hazardous Waste Regulations and for those facilities receiving vessels from the sea are also bound by the Port Waste Reception Facilities 2003.

It is important that all clubs and training centres are aware of their legal obligations. The Environmental Code of Practice is a valuable resource for establishing which regulations apply. In addition, the RYA and BMF have developed a 'Guide to Port Waste Management Planning' which can be downloaded from this site.

Waste can be an expensive business, however, careful management, reduction of waste produced, recycling where possibly can dramatically reduce your waste costs. The Green Blue has several case studies and good advice on reducing your waste.
