Streamlined GBR team to contest Miami Sailing World Cup

Dempsey and Shaw among nine GBR sailors at Miami World Cup

A small British contingent will take to the waters of Biscayne Bay next week for the start of the ISAF Sailing World Cup, Miami – the second leg of the 2012/13 World Cup tour in the Olympic and Paralympic classes (28 January-2 February).

Just nine Skandia Team GBR sailors have made the trip across the Atlantic, with Olympic medallists Nick Dempsey and Bryony Shaw headlining the men’s and women’s RS:X windsurfing events, along with rising stars Elliot Carney and Izzy Hamilton.

The Miami event will be preparation towards the RS:X Windsurfing World Championships, which take places in Buzios, Brazil, from 28 February-7 March.

World Championship bronze medallist Megan Pascoe contests the 2.4mR Paralympic class, while four of British Sailing’s young talents, Elliot Hanson, Alex Mills Barton, Jack Wetherell and Matt Reid, will be looking to test their mettle in the 72-strong Laser fleet.

In six of the Olympic Classes, including the RS:X men and women, Laser, Radial, 49er and 49erFX, organisers will test a variety new racing formats under consideration for Rio 2016.

The new Nacra 17 mixed multihull will be making its international regatta debut out in Miami, although having just received their first boats at the beginning of the month, British crews will have to wait until later in the season for their first competitive outing.

Racing at the ISAF Sailing World Cup Miami kicks off on Monday 28 January, with the final medal deciders on Saturday 2 February.
