Healthcare for visitors to the Islands
All visitors to the Bailiwick are advised to take out a full travel insurance to cover the cost of any medical treatment they may require during their stay in the islands.
The Health & Social Services Department wishes all visitors to the Bailiwick of Guernsey an enjoyable and healthy stay, whether for business or pleasure.
Unfortunately, illness or accidents can happen at any time.
Healthcare in Guernsey is provided by the Health and Social Services Department and is outside the UK National Health Service.
The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is not valid in the Bailiwick. Any enquiries related to the EHIC can be directed to 0845 606 2030.
This means that most visitors from the United Kingdom will have to pay a fee for all services. This includes all medical costs, hospital accommodation, radiology, pathology, pharmacy and physiotherapy.
If you are visiting from a country that has a bilateral health agreement with the Bailiwick this is likely to only provide for immediate necessary treatment and will not cover the costs associated with repatriation i.e. your travel home.
A bilateral health agreement is an agreement between two territories that provides for immediately necessary treatment, only for conditions which may arise during the stay of a visitor from the other territory.
The following countries do have an agreement with the Bailiwick:
- Australia
- Austria
- Barbados
- Iceland
- Jersey
- New Zealand
- Portugal
- Sweden
Visitors to the islands from these countries, requiring immediately necessary treatment, will be charged for treatment on the same basis as a local resident.
You can download information about the bilateral health agreement at the bottom of this page.
