Using a Custom Domain for your Virb site.

We know that you would prefer (and need) a custom domain for your Virb site. Without the proper know-how, the process of pointing a custom domain to Virb can be tricky. Therefore we've provided you two sets of instructions—one for those who've never done it and need some help, and one for the DNS pros out there.

Tell me how to set up DNS myself. I'm a pro.

Tell me how to get help! I've never done this before.

I don't have a custom domain and I'd like to purchase one

I'm new to DNS and need some help…

Step 1 — Contact the site where you purchased your domain.

DNS settings are managed by the company where you purchased your custom domain (Namecheap, GoDaddy, Network Solutions, etc), not Virb. The easiest and fastest way to set up your domain is to contact Customer Service at that company, and have them make the necessary changes for you.

To help, we've provided the contact info for the most popular domain registrars below:

  • GoDaddy - Support - (480) 505-8877
  • Network Solutions - Support - 1-877-811-0755
  • Media Temple - Support - (877) 578-4000
  • NameCheap - Support

Step 2 — Have the customer service representative edit your A Records.

The customer service rep will need to do two things.

1. Edit the A Record for "@" and point it to 64.207.128.132

2. Edit the A Record for "www" and point it to 64.207.128.132

This is all the representative needs to do to get the domain pointed to Virb's servers.

Step 3 — Save your domain name in your Virb site settings.

On the Settings page, add your domain name to the "Custom Domain" form field.

This lets Virb know that you are pointing a custom domain to your site. Also, be aware that it can take 24 to 48 hours for your domain to fully point to your site on Virb. During that time period, your domain may behave strangely (working for some visitors to your site, but not others). Be patient. This is completely normal and will clear up in time.

Once the process is complete, your original Virb domain (yourname.virb.com) will automatically redirect to your new custom domain.

I'm a DNS pro and know how to configure DNS settings…

Step 1 — Find your domain name's DNS settings.

1. Log in to the site where you manage your domain name.

Typically this is where you purchased/registered your domain name (Namecheap, GoDaddy, Network Solutions, etc).

2. Navigate to the section that lets you edit your domain's settings.

Specifically, you are looking for the spot where you can add or edit A Records. This area may be referred to as "Host Records," "DNS Settings," "Domain Settings," etc. Please note: you are NOT looking for "Name Servers"—that is a completely separate setting and not something we support for pointing a custom domain to your site on Virb.(Find this area on: GoDaddy, Network Solutions, NameCheap)

Step 2 — Edit the A Records on your domain name.

1. Edit the A Record for "@" and point it to 64.207.128.132

This will point "yourdomain.com" to your site on Virb. If you don't have an existing A Record for "@", create one.

2. Edit the A Record for "www" and point it to 64.207.128.132

If you are a Godaddy customer, edit the CNAME Record for "www" and point it to @ instead. This will point "www.yourdomain.com" to your site on Virb. If you don't have an existing A Record for "www", create one.

Note: While modifying your domain's settings/records, double check that domain or url Forwarding or Redirecting are turned OFF. Having this setting turned on will cause your domain to not work properly.

Need a Domain?

Purchase a domain name through Media Temple and it will automatically be configured for use with your Virb site. No DNS setup necessary!

Note: It can take up to 24 hours for your domain to fully point to your Virb site, though most will do so within a couple hours.

You can also purchase a domain name from a number of other places like Name.com, Namecheap, Godaddy, Network Solutions or one of the many ICANN-accredited domain registrars. Once you have purchased your domain, follow the steps above to properly point it to your site on Virb.
