J80s

We use UKSA’s fleet of three J80s, giving the sailors an ideal stepping stone into larger keelboats and also to be able to compete in one of the competitive small keelboats in the world.

Squad members’ initial training when they join the BKA takes place on UKSA’s fleet of J80s, giving them great experience of sailing larger boats than many are used to. Due to their size and number of crew, this also gives BKA coaches an opportunity to ensure they have a good idea of the sailors’ abilities before placing them on larger boats.

Should squad sailors wish, they have access to the J80s to put together their own campaigns for events such as National, World or European championships, or training for other events including match racing. This allows the sailors to do additional training or events on top of their core BKA programme, as well as giving them the opportunity to have full responsibility for areas such as logistics and raising necessary funds, giving them valuable experience in what is required to put a campaign together at this level.
