RS Feva Worlds Day 6

Exuberant end to vibrant event.

On day six one forecast had sailing being possible and one not. The latter was the correct one as it transpired. Latest start possible was3pmand the race team led by Greg Wells and Mike Dawe tried their hardest. But with 3 different wind directions at 3 different buoys and 3 different speeds getting just a fair start would have been a feat. Games of pirates and Feva Flipping could only last so long. So when the plug was pulled at the point that the start sequence couldn’t be completed a new World Champion was found.

Leonardo Stocchero & Gianluca Virgenti were the deserving winners fromItaly. This was their third tilt at the title and it couldn’t have been won by two nicer kids. The exuberance of the event was matched and more by the exuberance of the Italians at the prize giving. 14 Italian kids brought the house down by belting the anthem out. The closing ceremony had the Abarth Stunt plane put on a hearstopping performance. Airplanes really shouldn’t be able to do what it did. Jon Patridge from RS Sailing spoke eloquently and movingly about passion, sailing, family and friends.

A couple of thoughts before the list of winners: 4 different nations in top 4, Adriatic Weather conditions, feeling sorry for missing those moving on and up, feeling proud of the sailing skills and sportsmanship displayed, pleased for Leo and Gianluca and Italy, sorry for the big boys and girls who didn’t get to burn up the race track, amused at the Nations Cup (actually more like nearly died laughing!), loved the professionalism flexibility and friendly can do of HISC and all the volunteers.

So where did the choccies go? The top 10 in Gold, Top 6 in Silver and Top 3 in Bronze as well as top 3 Ladies, Juniors (U13), (U15) and Families.  Here they are

Worlds – Day 5 Report

The outline results are slowly coming into focus. With a maximum of 2 races to go and an iffy forecast, of the low and rotating speed variety, the endgame is beginning to play out. Much can change but looking at the quality of the leaderboard and the steadiness of some those in it the picture is emerging. But that is only the championship racing – man was there more on today! The nations cup made me split my sides and the blow up games and Hog Roast went down superbly.

But the championship first. Bet none of the racers spotted the Commodores Cup (unofficial offshore world championship) going on at the far side of the bay towards Bembridge. But there I digress again. It is probably fair to say that the current medal positions have established a breakaway. With the peleton led by the defending world champ you can’t rule anything out. Outstandingly none of the top 3 are currently counting a score outside of top 5 in the final series (the discard maybe but not a scoring race). We’ll have to check but we think that the championship leader Leonardo Stocchero & Gianluca Virgenti is attending his 4^th worlds (last year he was 8^th). They have carved out a 5pt lead over Robbie King & Josh Atherton (IRL) who in turn have the slimmest of 1pt over Jamie Smith & Piers Nicholls. The buffer to Matt Whitfield & James Taylor is a more substantial 22pts.

These light conditions have been the lighter guys best friend so it is no surprise to find that the U13 trophy is also being hotly contested. Jamie & Piers are the leaders of that with Albert Gelpi & Serra next in 5^th overall and Arthur Brown and Niamh Davies following in 13^th (But what is it with the Browns? – big sis in 9^th at the 29er worlds after day1 of Gold fleet!) The ladies are equally fierce in their combat. Jemima Lawson & Jenny Cropley in 6^th have a 23pt gap over Anna Prescott & Jess Eales in 11^th while Jess Hammet & Hattie Lucas-Clements are next in 15^th.

Daan & Roos are leading the Dutch charge in 22. Norwegian Brothers Tomas & Mads Mathisen in 24^th are also second family (Chris and Jamie Allen leading that in 8^th). Johanna Frisk & Sofia Lewerin are top Swedes in 30. Tavo Annus & Mikael Rismets are in charge of the Estonian effort. Scots Gillies & Katie Munro are 3^rd family at present. Although the Edmonds Nick & Alice (she’s the boss at age 7) are by a margin top Canadians!

Silver fleet is currently a girls tie break fest. Coming out on top overnight Emsworth heroines Delanie Rutter & Eve Townsend from Itchenor’s  Emma Baker & Isabella Black. But both are just the 1pt ahead of Coen Minderhoud and Louisa Coxson. 4^th and 5^th Brit and Maltese are also tie broken only six points adrift. Bronze has James Eales and Jack Lewis. Jourdan Swindon & Zak Bermon are 2^nd with Alice Kidd & Remi Pfister 3^rd.

The other stuff? Nations cup (sponsored by LDC Chandlers) sailed on a knockout basis sort of, was won by the French duo Louis Chambet & Lucas Tissot in what was pretty fiercely fought over a 6 minute course right in front of the club. We died laughing though when in the penultimate race (anonymity might be best here) the leader hooked up on the leeward mark and dragged it 25 yards into the beach. The others trying to get around them ran aground and into each other. A general Le Mans style running (in the water) restart then followed. The hundreds of spectators on the beach and rocks all needed some form of resuscitation after that. Priceless. The blow up games – well watch the website for pictures.

Worlds – Day 5 Video

The penultimate day of racing at the RS Feva Worlds at Hayling Island SC and the Italian pair, Leonardo Stocchero and Gianluca Virgenti, regained the overall lead. In another sun-baked day in Hayling Bay Stocchero and Virgenti won three of the four races to take a five point lead over Robbie King and Josh Atherton of Ireland, with Jamie Smith and Piers Nicholls (U13) just one point back in third . . . This leading trio have a 27 point cushion from fourth placed Albert Gelpi and Martí Serra (U13) of Spain . . .

In fifth place in the Gold fleet are the leading all girls crew, Jemima Lawson and Jenny Cropley. Rounding out the top six are Matt Whitfield and James Taylor.

Girls rule in the Silver fleet with Delanie Rutter and Eve Townsend leading tied on points with Emma Baker and Isabella Black. In third place are Coen Minderhoud and Louisa Coxson.

In the Bronze fleet James Eales and Hector Nelson are the new leaders. Second are Jourdan Swindon and Zak Bermon with Alice Kidd and Remi Pfister in third.

Today? Great!

Todays conditions were just one notch down from proper glamour. Truly great racing. 3 brilliant races for Silver and Bronze fleets as per original program and 5hrs including getting there and back. Gold being ahead of times but last off the water manage 4 races.  5 races into final series the points at the top are properly tight. RESULTS

Worlds – Day 4 Report

The final series started with optimism and for many anxiety. The fleet is now sorted (I’m sure it was easier in Harry Potter all this sorting – no need to do other than sit down with a hat on!) into equal sized Gold, Silver and Bronze Fleets. At the morning briefing a steady 7 kts was reported by the bay watch team. So on the hottest day of the year so far (32C in Southampton!), the Gold fleet was launched on time with the Silver and Bronze some 20+ mins later. By race time the wind was west of south and 5kts. The plan was to race each fleet successively with Gold doing inner loop first and the Silver and Bronze getting their shot on the outer loop twice once Gold had cleared the Leeward gate. The grand idea was to keep the fleets separated and racing able to proceed quickly and with little interruption.

Conditions were clearly perfect for Robbie King & Josh Atherton representing Ireland. Patient boat handling, good positioning and perfect tactics saw them romp to consecutive wins. They weren’t runaway wins but carefully crafted efforts with the opportunities picked off and the cover slammed on when they got ahead. Very mature! Jamie Smith and Piers Nicholls took out a 2,3 score line to slip into 2^nd overall  and the lead of the U13’s. Last year the Q series was blasted off by a properly windy day and resulted in no U13’s getting into the Gold fleet. This years tropical event at HISC by contrast sees no fewer than 7 U13 teams in the Gold fleet. The talent pipeline is alive and well as can be confirmed by last years U13 winners currently sitting in 23^rd (they miss this years cut off by 1 month!) The brilliant Italians Leonardo Stocchero & Gianluca Virgenti haven’t been out of the top 4 all week so far and are 3^rd at present.

The first race had to be canned when the Gold fleet was approaching the windward mark due to a massive left shift. The race team very rapidly managed to relay the course the course and get the show on the road again but with the light winds the small delays all added up to the third race also being canned in a weakening breeze and in the face of the fleet having been afloat for a fair time in the roasting conditions. The hog roast was planned for Thursday and so we didn’t need to baste the fleet today!

The battle for the ladies trophy is white hot with only one point separating Anna Prescott & Jess Eales in 5^th overall from Jemima Lawson & Jenny Cropley in 6^th. Third ladies are Jess Hammet and Hattie Lucas-Clements.

In the Silver fleet Norwegians Eirik Lundberg and Regine Tronstad have started to take a grip on top slot. Their gap on Rebecca Lewis & Fiona Mulcahy is now 8pts while they in turn have 9pts on Anya Green & Charlotte Ormerod. Italians Giacomo & Flippo Quarenghi are 4^th. The Norwegians won 1 race while the other went to Hugo Tucker & Guus Dutilh from Holland. We have to give an honourable mention to Maltese Andrew& Michela Mifsud who are 6^th in the first Worlds attended by Maltese sailors.

The Bronze fleet leaders are there on a tie break from second place. So at present it is Jourdan Swindon & Zak Bermon who lead from Alice Kidd & Remi Pfister. James Eales and Hector Nelson are 3^rd. The other prize category places: to finish off the U13’s – 2^nd Arthur Brown & Niamh Davies and 3^rd Albert Gelpi & Marti Serra (ESP) and the familes are led by Chris & Jamie Allen with the Munro’s of Scotland 2nd but on a tie break from the Mathisen’s of Norway!
