INAUGURAL INTER CLASS CHALLENGE, 2nd September 2012
Posted 29th September 2012
On Sunday 2nd September the inaugural Inter Class Challenge took place. This involved teams from other classes each borrowing a K6 and competing in four 30 minute back to back races. Conditions were ideal with a wind of 8 - 12 Kts from the west allowing a simple 2 lap windward/leeward course to be set up in the Gallon reach.
Seven classes were represented and racing was extremely competitive with much place changing and some very close finishes. Quality starts were crucial to positions at the first mark and then on the downwind legs the key judgement call was whether to sail low to stay in shallow water or to luff up and get the boat on the plane with the latter definitely favoured when the wind was up. In addition to the mark rounding, the windward and leeward gates also provided great opportunities for aggressive tactics and place changes and some nervous moments for the boat owners sitting on Betivuka.
Jonathon Pudney and Adrian Fisk representing the Mirrors won the series with two firsts, a second and a fourth. John Tremlett and Sally Heatlie from the XODs were second pipping Roger Yeoman and Andy Fitzgerald sailing for the 420s by virtue of an impressive win in the last race breaking the deadlock with each having recorded a first, second, third and fourth. The Swallows (Mike Wigmore and Chris Fox), 14s (Dave Maclean and Andy Penman) and the 200s (Rob Struckett and Andy Pinkham) were all very much in the mix and contributed to the excellent racing. The Sunbeams had a less successful afternoon and should probably have accepted the invitation of a trial sail to perfect their kite recovery routine.
The overall view was that this was a highly enjoyable event fostering inter class competition and friendly rivalry. The K6 worked well as a fun easy boat to step in and sail and a reasonable leveller offering some reassuring lead for the keelboat sailors and asymmetric planning for the dinghy representatives. The intention is to run this again next year with a few refinements.

SINGLE-HANDED QUESTIONNAIRE
Posted 17th September 2012
We were delighted to receive 53 responses to our single-handed questionnaire. The Laser clearly had the highest support expressed, followed by the Solo and then the RS 100. We have therefore decided to focus the next stage of investigations on the Laser (standard and radial rig) with a view to trialling next season, with the other two classes as reserve options. A summary of the responses/conclusions and a further questionnaire aimed specifically at the Laser can be found here. All interested in the Laser are requested to complete this by 30th September so that results can be taken into account in time for setting the 2013 programme.

ITCHENOR XOD'S RETAIN 'CAPTAIN'S CUP' IN COWES WEEK
Posted 19th August 2012
Itchenor have retained "The Captain's Cup" for the 3rd successive year and what is more 3 of our boats could have won the trophy going into yesterday's race which Catherine won convincingly though it was not decided until the rounding of the penultimate mark. Well done to Steve, Peter and Paddy for winning the cup a 2nd time, to Phoenix for nearly making it 2 years in a row and to Lass for nearly winning it for the 1st time.
The leading group in all the races had good Itchenor representation with a straight 1,2,3,4 on the 1st day. These stunning results by our 15 boats in a total entry of 83 is fantastic and almost certainly means that we retain the Phillipson Shield for the 2nd year running.
As you can see from the results (link here) Itchenor had Catherine , Phoenix, Lass, Felix, Astralita, Foxglove and Sweet X in the top 20.
Well done to all that competed in challenging conditions against talented opposition.

CLASS REVIEW 2012 for 2013 SEASON
Posted 2 August 2012
In the Class Review undertaken last winter, it was decided that we would reassess the demand for racing a single-handed dinghy at the Club from 2013. It was felt that this should be a non trapeze boat given our existing class structure, but there are still many such classes.
The attached questionnaire seeks to assess interest in both the concept and classes - we have included all such classes that have been suggested by members but are open to other suggestions. All interested should return the questionnaire to Louise at the office by 26th August by email or post. We intend to take a decision this autumn for possible implementation in 2013.

OLYMPIC REGATTA
Posted 29th July 2012
Elizabeth Pattison had excelled herself! The participants in the Itchenor SC Olympic Day were greeted by a Firefly and Finn on the lawn and wonderful memorabilia boards of those ISC members who had competed in Olympic Games, and also in the Olympic trials. And, of course, there was much about those who had won medals --including a real Gold from Iain Macdonald-Smith. With both Iain and twice silver medalist Ian Walker attending the celebration tea in person.

ITCHENOR 420's ON THE ROAD
Posted 25th July 2012
Along with other members of the British team, three Itchenor 420s have started their summer travels. Charlotte Fitzgerald & Emma Spruce, Isabel Fitzgerald (sailing with Kat Colvin) and Hugo Sloper (James Dodd) have just spent a week in Northern Brittany for the French Nationals. A useful warm up for team GBR, in a large mixed fleet, before they head to Austria for the 420 Worlds; although conditions are likely to be rather different (English Channel vs Austrian Lake) at the main event. All three Itchenor boats made it to the Gold fleet and Hugo and James achieved a creditable 4th overall (3rd Youth).

SCHOOLS WEEK ROUNDUP 2012
Posted 2nd July 2012
The 60th anniversary of the Schools Sailing Championships welcomed 22 schools with 55 boats, split neatly between Int.420's and Fireflies. The weather on Wednesday was kind enabling the trainers to improve the competitors skills at sailing in tidal waters and making good starts.
On Thursday the PRO managed to fit in 6 back to back races for the two fleets, with some tight racing particularly in the Firefly fleet.
It was good to see the girls from Surbiton and Parkstone battling for first position in the Int 420 fleet. Disappointing that the wind was too strong to sail on Friday, but we had worthy winners, who received their cups from Mimie Currey whose father, Charles, had started the competition in 1952.
We will look forward to seeing all the competitors and their teachers back again next year.
Many thanks also to the kind hosts who open up their homes to the children and also the Support Boat crews.

SCHOOLS WEEK FEVAS
Schools Week opened up to academic years 7,8 and 9 over Monday 24th and Tuesday 25th June. The boat chosen for the event was the RS Feva, currently the most popular and indestructible junior two handed boat.
Ten boats were charted from RS Feva by Mirror sailors. Fourteen different schools took part with a total of nineteen Fevas. The Race Officer, Roger Yeoman, managed to successfully run ten races over the two days, in light winds. Evening entertainment BBQ , Bucking Brunco and Sumo Wrestling, was well attended. In all a successful event, and special thanks to all the Itchenor club staff for their flexibility and support. Do you know a school who could enter next year? Ask Louise at the Itchenor Club Office for details.
